Filters

my wife says my filter is very noisy and says it is doing her head in, is there such a thing as a non noisy filter.
the filter is a fluval 1plus.

Some filters will be quieter then others, IMO its just a case of getting one thats appropriate and getting used to the noise I have mine right next to my bed, at first I thought it would drive me crazy, now I quite like it

depends if you are willing to spend some money on a external filter, they can be almost silent if there in a cuboard (they look plain nasty), and its good for the fish too. but a good one can cost around £60 for a small 100l one to £200 for a 500l one. its realy whats your budget

I'm surprised my girlfriend hasn't poked her head into this one. LOL

I'm still looking for something that's quiet enough for her.

The only way I can make a filter quiet is to add water to the point where the air pocket between thee top and the waterline is small. Anything less....makes noise.

If you are using an HOB filter, you will get some noise, but filling the water above where it comes out helps somewhat.

Personally...I've long since gotten used to the sound of filters.

I'm with darkwolf. On my canisters I fill the water to the point of it spilling out to keep the noise down. On HOT filters sometimes putting a cotton ball in between the glass and the bottom part of the filter that touches the glass cuts down on vibrations and therefore noise. Not having your filter level on the back of the tank can make it a bit noisier sometimes too. I have more problems with noise from airstones than filters.

Same here, i had my Elite air pump on 2 minutes and then took it back, couldnt handle the racket.

Hi if you bring the filter down a little just the water this will reduce the noise.
I have a fluval 3+ but i like the water noise

Is the "excessive" noise the flow of water, or the sound of the filter pump?

Is the filter completely submerged by water?

the noise is the water flow i find it quite relaxing but the wife is not so keen one of my mate [no expert] recommends a under gravel filter would that keep the wife off my back.

under gravel filters are so old now, i wouldnt suggest one since you would need an air pump running meaning it will be louder. I got my filter right under the water so can't hear the flow of water but i've got air bubbles to move the surface water, i've just gotten used to the sound of the air pump plus its not on 24/7 anyways

Eheim canister, submerge the spray bar. The clock on my wall is noisier.
