Im getting myself a new external filter for my big tank in a week or so, but never quite been able to decide which one. The cheapo ebay, the eheim 2224, the tetratec ex700, rena xp, so on and so forth.

But in order to help there is good old youtube - an get maintenence & setup videos that give a much bigger insight to the filters than a photo of the box on a retailers website.

But watching these videos, there is one thing I keep seeing which is shocking the hell outta me - i've yet to see a video where the person DID NOT take th external to a sink to clean it, which involved unpacking it and running the media under the bloody tap!!!

LOL

as for your filter dilema, how big is your tank? I'd go for the tetratec ex 1200 it is only slightly dearer than the 700 and is an excellent filter. it has a spray bar so the flow is not as fierce, i ran one on a 100l tank for ages with no problems.

I take mine to the sink to clean it, but i also take a bucket of tank water with me and rinse it with that....

see thats my idea - go to the sink to keep things clean, but take a bucket of old water with you for doing the cleaning.

as for the question about the tank size, its close to 200 litrees, but originally price meant quite a bit - £10 more was £10 too much. I looked at my LFS website (www.uda.co.uk) and found the ex700 for £79.99 - I then checked it against my usual aquatic price checking website (www.aquatics-online.co.uk) where I saw it was also £79.99 - a god price IMO as a result. Back to the LFS website, where the EX1200 was £99.99 - £20 dearer and out of the running.

On your suggestion, I just checked aquatics online again and saw it was £81.99 - an excellent deal. So I think I will take your advice my good friend, gonna get the ex1200 (had pretty much settled on the tetratec, good reviews, videos show a logical system to rival or match eheim styles and the fact all bars & media is included thats a gooooood thing.

But still, rinsing it out in bloody tap water!!!
