Hey i am going to setup a marine tank near the summer time, and was looking at a 180 litre tank.I worked it out and i would need abound 18kg of live rock, costing from £150 which is fairly expensive. This would act as my filter so instead of L.R can anyone reccomend the best brand of filters for marine tanks
Thanks

With any marine tank you will still need at least a few lbs of live rock.

LR is not a necessity for a marine tank, but it is highly recommended and very helpful...especially if you're keeping a reef tank or finicky fish.

You could fill your tank with base rock for a lot cheaper and buy a few pounds of LR to seed it and go from there. It will all become live eventually and won't cost you a small fortune. At least with a decent amount of live rock your tank could be fairly self supporting with a refugium and good skimmer. That's the way I'd go if I were you.

I only have 2 HOBs on my tank for running media (GAC, GFO, and Purigen) as needed.

ok thanks im getting specialists to make the tank what would you think would eb suitable in terms of height and depth pleas
i thought of this 120 x 60 x 55

Thats a pretty big tank, im assuming that the numbers listed are centimeters right?

If the calculation that I do is correct, then that tank would hold about 103 gallons, or around 390 liters.

yeah thats correct do you think its too big for a beginner could you give me any other dimensions as it will be custom bulit

No thats a great size.. depends on your living space.. i'd go with something a little longer.. and at 55cm high your gonna need some MH, not sure PC will get penetration.

Hey Ter, would you mind if I asked you a question? Kind of in a situation where I dont know which tank I should get, and was hoping someone more experienced could give me some advice.

£150 for the live rock?

surely you would end up spending almost this amount of a very good external filter and media anyway

i thought marine was all about live rock? thats one of the rewards of marine isn't it? no more filter hassles LOL

well, as for your tank.. 6 feet(184cm) long 120gallon(US) is very nice  , lol not only for its nice length but respectable width also. The length of this tank is also very practical for weight distribution, lets say your arent quite sure what your flooring arrangement is.

A 120gallon tank is about the same volume as your proposed tank.

I am pretty sure you were talking to me with the last reply Ter, but that is not my question.

I dont mean to hijack Nathan's thread, but Ter, if you dont mind, scroll down a few threads to the one that I made, and read the last thing that I posted, that is my question.

Thanks
