I´m looking for somewhere online that I can buy a roll of filter wool. I want an allternative to the Juwel filters that cost a fortune. Can anyone help?

Thanks

goto a haberdashers (sp?) AKA a place that flogs stuff to dressmakers etc, such as "Denelm" and ask for "wadding"
Comes in different thicknesses, and is sold by the METRE for a couple of quid.... make dozens of the white pads for my Eheim filters :good:

they sell 10 metre purpose pond filter wool on ebay think its 12-15 mm thickness for around £10 so i think it would probably work out cheaper that way :)

Why do I get the feeling they might suddenly run out of stock now? - lol

same as above with the white floss i use to change the white evey few weeks and the carbon every 2 months or so all i did with the green and blues is rince them out in old tank water saves a fortune

juwel do a new cirax mechanical media what improves the cleaning and flow rates (iirc its a type of ceramic)

well at that price i cant believe they dont already lol but yeh i brought some months back and still have half a role and like i said its ok recommending ppl use other stuff from household things but why when its so cheap 2 buy the stuff they say is for proper filtartion when it works out either same price or cheaper and delievered to your door :)

why do folk persist in this "Id rather get the REAL stuff from a fish shop ?" the alternatives are EXACTLY THE SAME, no doubt comes from the same factories.... and where do you think the shops get there non packaged stuff ? From the dead expensive proper fish stuff warehouse ? Or the cheaper "we'll make a killing on this" alternative ?

I give up .... this is a DIY forum ####, if you cannot bear the idea of DOING IT YOUSELF then why come here ?

I agree with what you are saying Rooster, but if you are able to get something similar, cheaper & easier, then surely that is worth pointing out too?
That e-bay link looks good to me, a lot of roll for not much £££ and it's delivered to your door, works out a lot cheaper than the purpose cut filters for each filter type, but is also still an 'aquarium' filter wool.
I know if I came in here planning to DIY build an aquarium because I wanted a hexagonal one or something & priced up the parts, I would certainly want someone to pipe up if they knew I could just buy a hexagonal aquarium delivered to my home cheaper or for not much price difference.
DIY is good, its a great way of getting things done, but lets not be blinded from good deals on the 'proper stuff' that will save us the hassle.

The haberdashery stuff is probably cheaper, but if one day they decide to fill it with fire retardants that are toxic to aquatics they aren't going to tell you, because thats not what it's for. However if I found that my fish died because of filter roll I bought from an 'aquatic supplier' then I would expect some sort of comeback :)

I bought mine from ebay, and apart from having to cut it to size, it works great. You can also buy the stuff from garden centres btw.
