Filter Too Strong

Hi. I hope somebody can help me. I have an underwater filter which blows out water at a horrendously high volume. Things go flying in my tank. And so does my axolotl. My pleco is ok, though, as he is strong.
Anyway, this is definately a problem. This is a new filter (my old one broke), and the volume of water output cannot be changed. There is two places it comes out from, the main big one is a problem. I tried to block it with ducktape, and it was great. But it only lasted 2 days befor the ducktape come off!
Has anybody have any other suggestions? Nothing too technical, tho, as I don't understand much about DIY.

How high is the outlet.. if its low, can it be reduce by putting a rock or something in its path, or if its at the top, angling it towards the surface?

To my knowledge there is very little else you can do apart from what Squid mentioned.
If your filter is too strong and fish go on a roller coaster ride through the water - then you have to buy a suitable filter.

Many thanks for quick replies! I will try what Squid said, and hopefully it helps. (Outlet is at the top)
My tank is 55G, and I think filter is called Filter No1. (Will check tonight when I get home).
Water comes out at the rate of 120 litres., huh. I did tell the lady at lfs what it was for, but I quess she wasn't experienced enough in filters...

If you mean 120 litres per hour, it's not strong enough...

Can you check the exact name of the filter?

The filter is Aqua One Power Filter. 1200 litres per hour. The water comes out so strong that even things at the bottom of the tank keep moving around. Pleco is still ok, but axolotl gettin a bit stressed, as if she goes to that end of tank, she'll fly,huh. So I tried to block it with ducktape again, but obviously that is not a permanent solution, as it only will last for a few days again. Thanks for your help again

After your post I did some checking on my filter.

I have a Fluval 4 which does 1000 Liters per Hour (315 gph), my tank is only 120 litres. which is about 28 gallons I think.

It is strong but the fish love it and dont mind it at all. But i do have to have it on its lowest setting otherwise my tank will take off.

Check to make sure there isn't a bit to reduce the flow.

There is, somewhere in DIY a device made to stop strong filter flow.
Made from a plastic drinks bottle. Let me see if I can find it...........
