Hi there! I am planning on adding a 29 gallon (US) tropical community tank to my den; it will be the only tank in the house. I have been doing a lot of interesting reading and learning. I will stick to 'hearty' schooling fish for now. I have read that a good guildeline for filtration is 10gal/hour per gallon of water. I am looking at using either an Emperor 280 or 400. Would the 400's flow be overkill or bothersome to the schooling fish?

Thanks!

Thanks for the advice! :) The dealer that I am planning on using has the 400 for $2 (US) more than the 280, so I was seriously considering it. I don't want to overdo it.

i dont think u can ever have too much filtration, i have a peng. 170 on a 20 lomg CRYSTAL CLEAR pumps 170 gal per hr..i have 2 peng 330's on a 55, same deal always go lger...never smaller wont hurt at all!!!

No such thing as too much filtration, but there is such a thing as too much water movement. I would go with the 280.
Thanks very much for the advice. The water flow is what I am concerned about. :)

Another question as I plan things out: Would I do better with a cannister filter? I'd rather not pay for an ehiem, but a fluval for my size tank would only cost me about 20% more (plus media) than the emperor 280 that is my candidate for power filter. I'm looking for a good mix of ease of use/changing and excellent filtration.

Thanks! :)

Current plans for the tank: 6 zebra danios, 6 cardinal tetras and 2 dwarf gouramis. Once the tank is stocked to that level (2 fish every 2 weeks in the order listed) I may add a few more to the schools if parameters stay stable for six months or a year.

Do a proper fishless cycle on the tank and you won't have to worry about stocking it so slowly. You can add your first 2 schools pretty much right off the bat.
