Good morning all and happy holidays;

i just gotten a flatback hex 45 galon tank as an early christmas present, it has a built in filter which is in a sealed compartment inside the aquarium, in this compartment there is three chambers the first which has holes at the bottom for getting water from the aquarium the second and then the third. the first two is devided by a shorter section than the third part which contains one 340 l/h pump at the bottom and water shoots from the top height is about 30 cm from bottom up to the shoot.

now, my LSF guy set it up for me leaving the first compartment with nothing in it, he put some white floss type filter material at the bottom and a bag of carbon (i think) on top of it and another pad of the white stuff then a thick sponge in the second compartment, and then the pump in the third.

My question is, what is the type of this filter, also is the setup correct?? :S

i am having doubts about the size of the pump, since i am not seeing any movement of the water, also i am not feeling that the damn thing is sucking anything to the compartments :/

thks

I suspect you have not got any replies because nobody knows the filter you are talking about.

It is clearly some kind of built in filter - not a hob as the title suggests, that will confuse people.

I do not use built ins, OR hobs, I don't like them. If you have it, try it for a while and see how it goes.

As for the set up, again, difficult to say. Does it have a biowheel? If so, the majority of your biological filtration will be happening there, and the earlier stages will be used to stop the biowheel clogging, floss would be good, but needs to be maintained carefully if it is the only pre-filter, the sponge is a good idea.

I don't use carbon in filters. It becomes deactivated very quickly, and there are a lot better media for biological colonisation then a bag of inactive charcoal.

If there is no biowheel, then I'd fill the empty chamber with ceramic tubes, siporax or similar for a good biological bed.

:D the hob is a shortened Hobbyist which is in my login name ( newbie hob).

no the system does not have a bio wheel in it, but thanks for your answer, it did clarify what i was asking for.

thanks again

LOL. Normally when people talk about "hob" in the equipment forum they are talking about "Hang On Back" type filters. They are very common in the US in particular. I never see them here.
