Filter Question

Hi all

I recently bought a Penn-Plax Cascade 300 internal filter and I'm having some trouble putting it together.

The destructions are pretty basic and I've followed them to the letter but there's an "airtube with muzzler" (looks like a plastic airstone) that it says attach to the flow nozzle.

From the diagram I can see where it's supposed to go but there's no way such a small tube will fit over the fixing that it's supposed to.

I've tried heating it to make it more supple but it still won't fit.

Is it really necessary to have the airhose attached or is it just an added extra that's not really necessary?

I thought the Cascade range from PP were hang on externals, not internals. Are we talking about the same thing here?

The box definately says internal. It has 4 suckers on the back to hold it in place.
