I'm considering purchasing one of those emperor 400 filters (400 gph) when I get a bigger tank, but I read on a diff forum that those bio wheels, though effective, are really noisy. I keep the tank in my room and I'd really like to be able to sleep when having the filter in my tank running, lol. So, if someone could tell me exactly how loud this (or any) bio wheel type filter is, I'd appreciate it ^^

do you have to get a bio wheel filter?
i like aqua clears better, and they make no noise when the water level is full enough
whisper filters are really quiet but im not sure how good they are. it depends how big of tank you have too. i dont really know much on bio wheels.

Well, I jsut shop at petco, and the only filters they have that are compatible with 55gallon aquariums are the emperors. They have some really big filters for 150+ aquaria, but the only thing I saw for 55's was the emperor. And it has the bio wheel. Would 2 small filters do the job of one big one or would there not be enough power?

I have a Pengiun 330 sitting on a 55G and I don't even hear it.

Currently run 9 Fluval 404's on everything from a 175 to a twenty gallon. No problems; fish are happy, and the water is fine.

The bio wheel is very quiet and sounds like a gental waterfall in the background personally I find it very relaxing and would love it to be in my room if that were the case.

One thing I should mention though that one else did for me on this forum is the cost of the bloody replacement filters which run about about 8 bucks for one. They are the MOST expensive filter medium prepackaged that all of my LFS sell. That is my only complant.

Hi Everyone,

I give a second for a fluval cannister filter. I have the 204 for my 37 gal. planted tank and I couldn't be happier. The filter is very powerful, and after getting the initial bubbles out after start up, it will run silent. You also have the advantage of adding multiple filter media to customize for your needs.

I know the Pengiun 330 has this option and I expect the Emperor does also for adding additional filtering media.

If you shop Petco then you are probably in the US. You can order Pengiun 330's online at www.petsmart.com for $24.95 and they are are Petco.com for $23.95.

I have an Emperor 280 on a 29 gal tank and it is very quiet. Even with the water level slightly low, it still doesn't make much of a splashing sound.
