Hey I have a 100 litre cichlid setup which at the moment has the Supplied Juwel internal filter on the right hand side and an additional Juwel 'smaller' internal filter boxed in on the left too (a filter from a previous tank).

I want to add an external filter as-well to it so... here are a few q's if someone can try helping me please!?

1. Can someone recommend a good, but affordable external? I've looked at a Eheim one here-

I was thinking the ECCO External 2234 model, which is up to 200 litres per hour and priced at £64.99 inc delivery.

2. Do these filters and similar usually come supplied with spray bars/intakes, piping etc or do I need to purchase these?

3. In terms of 'spray bars' do these come in different sizes? Only i've got a foam backdrop in my tank (pic in my signature), so i wanted to get one which will fit nicely into it?

4. Someone told me I could put the filters intake pipe into one of my internal filters to hide it away? Is this usually possible?

5. Is there such a thing as 'too much filtration' ?

Sorry for all the questions, hope someone can help me :D

  1. External
http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/fish/filters...etra/19461#more this one looks pretty good price wise, not read any bad review personally bt dont know any who has tried one yet.
  2. Spray bars
I have never bought one which comes with the spray bar, if you go for a more expensive one maybe it will come with one or you can barter one thrown in for the price.
  3. Intake pipe
I would be tempted to place the inlet to the external in the corner pocket of one of the jewel boxes, where the heater would normally go.
  4. too much filtration
I wouldnt imagine so. You can get fish which are sensitive to strong currents so in that sense possibly, but filtration wise the more the better but a point would come where its not going to get any better.

thanks for that- that link you made was broken tho, it said-

Could you re-link plz :)

Id ditch both juwel internals and get 1 large external, Tetratec EX700/1200 would do nicely.

I would do, but it means ripping out both filters which i've boxed in with the black foam background and they'd need re-siliconing back in which I cant do when it's full of water :(

any more for any more?

I just replaced a tetra ex600 in my juwel rio 125 fitted very brill had the intake/outtake at one end and the juwel filter up the other end. Had to replace it though as ive had it 3yr and the seals hardend and leaked

Anyways just brought a ehiem 2026 its a great filter it was akward to fit but they do fit and thease things have 22mm pipes on them! I set it up with my old juwel running to seed for now but when its finished ill be putting the intake pipe into the juwel box with no media just the heater and the spray bar is on the other end :D

So ill just have a ehiem 2026 doing all the work I spoke to a guy who knows about thease filters as hes seen them made, he said you can run them for 6 months or so in a small tank without changin the media just keep turning the flow up till it gets cloged then give them a good clean and start over again :good:

my tetra I was changing once a month!

To set up a custom spray bar is easy. Get a piece of pvc tubing at the hardware store that is the right diameter to fit your filter return. Buy a cap to put on it, drill small holes along the length to act as the diffuser holes and put it together. The cap goes on one end and a connection to your filter on the other end. Length and number of holes is up to you. More holes or larger holes mean more flow at lower velocities. I would start with smaller and fewer holes than I expected to need. It's always easy to add a hole or open one up a bit. It's a bit harder to make a hole smaller or plug one.

If you're not planning on reclaiming the litres by removing the existing filters, is there a reason that you think you need this? Are you struggling to keep your ammonia/nitrite levels down?

I have a very similar set up with my Rio 300L - the large Jewel Box filter + a fluval 4 internal. I'm currently thinking about removing these 2 from the tank, and putting in one external filter.
