Hi all !

I recently bought a nice new jewel tank with built in pump (back right in black box section with filter etc)

Anyway everything seemed fine until the other day after we had done a major water change.

I noticed the filter wasnt pushed in properly and working in the correct way so i sorted that out and now its pumping out water..

The problem is it's pumping out water which seems MUCH weaker than before, now i don't know if im just paranoid or not but it doesn't seem very powerful... If you put your hand near it you can just about feel the water pumping out so slightly concered...

My gf's parents have a bigger jewel tank which seems more powerful (filter)

Any ideas guys as i dont want to loose my fish because of this, is a small amount coming out ok ? anything i can do or should do ? the water is rippling from it but nothing major.

Cheers :)

You probally need to clean the impeller which is located inside the pump. This gets mess all over it and doesn't turn well so just needs cleaning every so often.

whats the best way to clean this so i can do it on my juwel tank?

Do you think mate ?

I took it out yesterday and had a little look everything seemed ok.

Very strange and worrying really.

It actually seems to be turning ok which is the strange thing.
Could it be something to do with the filter pads ? should i take them out or not touch them.

Any ideas or tips much appreciated, rather worried for the fish now

Hi, I have a Juwel Rekord 96. I find that after I have changed the white polypad (weekly or more if necessary) or any other sponge when it is due for a change the water movement is much more noticable. If I notice that the plants aren't swaying as much as usual I change the polypad, it is usually dirty. That is as well as ordinary maintenance of course! I have a Common Pleco and they produce a lot of waste. Hope this helps. :) I have also recently bought the venturi kit and the water moves much more now. I still have to change the polypads when necessary because of the Pleco.

Thanks mate

I haven't changed any pads since i bought the tank 4 weeks ago...

What do i need to do ? how do i clean them etc ?

Cheers

Hi, this is when to change the sponges. Replace the white polypad once a week (or more often as I said before). Replace the carbon sponge(black) every 4-6 weeks. Don't leave it longer than that or the chemical impurities which have been absorbed will be released back into the water. If you do those two things the coarse blue sponges can be cleaned or replaced at 6-12 weeks and the fine blue sponge at 3-6 months only. Only clean one blue sponge at a time or you will lose the biological substances which have built up.

I read all that from the manual to be sure I was telling you the right thing! Some more advanced fishkeepers don't like carbon and I have changed the top blue coarse sponge for Juwel's new Nitrate Removing Sponge. Probably best to stick to the manual at first. Hope that helps. :) Sorry, forgot to say how to clean them. To be honest I don't, I replace them. You must rinse them in tank water, not tap water.

Thanks for your help there mate !

When you say replace this pad and that pad do you mean just clean them out ??

Dont do it with tap water then ??? If so what do i do literraly squeeze it out in the tank :S

Ill try all this tonight then if im getting this right

No need to replace your sponges, just rince them out in a bucket of old tank water once a month unless you have real dirty fish then maybe every couple of weeks.
Never wash the pads in tap water as this will kill the bacteria on there and put your tank through a cycle again.
Manufactures tell you to replace pads weekly but its a con , they will last months :D

You can rinse all the sponges in tank water. Some people even manage to rinse the white polypad, mine are always so filthy I just throw them away. I don't think you rinse the sponges actually in the tank but I always replace the sponges rather than rinse them. It's just personal choice. I have a cupboard with all the sponges in so I never run out (which I have in the past - nearest lfs is a round trip of 25 miles!). And RYO is right ,some people's sponges last for years. I just chuck them out but either is OK. I asked man in lfs if I should replace the light tube after a year as recommended by manufacturers and he said they would make you buy a new hood each year if they could! :)

Hiya,

Always found the same problem with my compact H filter. They seem to clog very easily.

Simply remove some of your aquarium water, and put it into a bucket. Next remove the powerhead from the filter, and extract the baskets that carry the foams. First make sure that the foams are in the correct order, and then clean them out in the aquarium water. The polywool pad, (the white one), was always slowing my filtration down. Slower filtration is not something to get too worried about on the juwel filter. It has a huge capacity in terms of biological load, once established.

If there is a flow of water that is good enough to disturb the water surface fairly well, when the output nozzle is turned towards the surface, then don't worry.

I have a friend that leaves his Juwel filters six months without touching them.

He has happy fish, and I have tested his water regularly. He only needs a water change every three weeks.

A very good filter, if a little noisey (IMHO).

Don't panic.

Sub.
