the pump for my trickle filter died overnight, did an emergency transfer of surviving fish (lost 3) to other tank (now over crowded), went and purchased a new filter right away. The only problem is when the pump went it leaked black gunk into the tank that floats on the surface, did a 100% water change and soaked up what I could with paper towel, seemed to of gotten it all (I hope), there's also a slight strange smell left behind, I was wondering if this gunk would be bad if I missed any of it (I figure probably not as come from something ment to have aquarium water passed through it) after other peoples opinions

hi there cant help on the gunk...any chances this is something to do with caqrbon if u had it in the filter only thing that does consern me is u have done a 100% water change and a new filter i assume now u need to restart a fishless cycle and u have now overstocked yr other tank...
take care

This must've been an external water pump of the old school number with "Oil" as the cooler. The part that suck is the oil will coat everything. Other than complete clean up with Dawn Dish Soap the residue will remain (to an extent).

I too have an old Iwaki that's been running second hand for over ten years.

no it was an internal pump, i can only assume the gunk is part of the lubricant for the propeler pump shaft, and dont need to restart cycle as I used the media from the trickle filter in the new internal filter

Does the tank smell of sulphur or rotten eggs.

no wilder no sulphate smell but I think I tracked it down

I took a close look at the pump last night and noticed a small crack in the top of the housing right next to some epoxy resin I had used to repair the pumps mount which looked burnt, also the smell which has dissapated now smelt like the resin I'd used so my guess is either heat from the siezed pump or arcing electricty (through the crack?) burnt the resin creating the smell/black stuff

Ok, do you run black carbon just to be on the safe side.

dont have any money to get any carbon till friday, blew the rest of my money on the replacement filter and dont want to leave my other tank so overstocked so might transfer a few fish and keep close eye on them

Ok, just do another water change tomorrow and it should be fine.
