Hi, i have got a 11 gallon tank which has a old filter someone gave to me. There is one problem, the tank is in my bedroom on a desk and the filter needs to be on over-night. The filter makes quiet a loud " low buzzing" sound. Any suggestions on what to do, or maybe if i need a new filter what kind! ? Thanks

are you sure its thye pump making the noise, mine used to buzz turned out to be the lid, place rubber bits between the lid and tank all is ok now.

ok whats 11 galls in liters, i have a fluval 1 in a 40 litre tank thats very quiet :)

11 gallons is about 41 liters. If it's a hang on back filter, they can sometimes be a little louder. Not much you can do for it to make it quieter. About the only option is to replace it. Canister filters are generally quieter than HOBs.

I prefer submersible filters for quietness, and in general, HOBs get loud as they age.

It may be the Impeller depending on the type of filter you have. As with age the impellers need to be replaced sometimes because they do not fit right and they start to make sound. Try replacing the impeller and see if that helps.

What brand filter is it?

Like mentioned, after time the impeller can go out and that's happened to me before but I've also had some last many many years without that happening.

Try gently moving the down tube (the part that is in the water) towards you/away etc just a hair. Not far and you probably won't even notice it physically move. Mine sometimes has a noise when I hit it during a gavel vac and that fixes it.
