I'm setting up a 15 gallon planted tank and want to use a canister filter for filtration. I've found a Marineland 350 magnum canister filter for sale near me for a reasonable price. Would this be too much for a 15 gallon? (It's rated for up to 100 gallons) Also, the person selling it had it on a saltwater tank, would I have any trouble using it on a freshwater tank after cleaning it and what not?

I, personally, don't believe in too much filtration. I do believe in too much filter flow, but that's an easy problem to deal with. This filter will be perfect, especially if you plan on keeping messy fish, because it's about 10x your volume, and I believe canisters are more effective (I'm not sure though). However, I'm not sure if you'd have any issues using the filter or not. I'm sure that if you start with new media and run vinegar and water through it and then rinsed it well that it would do just fine.

What's the gph turnover?

i have a 4 foot tank and i have an internal and 2 externals with media in each targeting different bacteria groups.
In compination, i have 3500/lph, but because of the way i have positioned the outlets, it doesnt creat too much of a current either, and my tank is near crystal clear
