Hi Guys,

Bit of advice, I have a Fish R FUN FFF777 and I have run out of filter media - in the interim while I am waiting for new to arrive as have to order online as not easy to get hold of, I have some Jewel Filter sponge (blue) and some of that white fleece. Can I make a temporary filter - I have the carbon from the correct filter and which way round should I put it? Blue at bottom, carbon then fleece or other way round?

Thanks

Basically the one in the filter holder needs changing it is just a piece of fleece that sits in holder with carbon in the middle -so it is still there - I am supposed to change it every month and now needs changing but place I get it from was out of stock

Don't quote me on this but I don't think your meant to be changing filter meida once a month, you will be getting rid of the good bacteria that's held in your filter system.

Is it the booklet that came with the fish tank that tells you to change it once a month?

yeah it is - it is very basic fleece filter media it goes in black box it is just a piece of fleece with carbon bag in middle and I have bio rings in one section - filter media in middle - empty space other side. I rinse it in aquarium water when doing a water change then place it back. Thing is I am getting a new tank next week hopefully - a much bigger one, so do you think it can wait.

Also another question. I have 2 colombian redfins, two black widow tetras, 2 clown loaches, 4 male guppies and a rubbernose pleco. I keep reading about aquarium salt. Am I supposed to put in tank. I have never done this before as worried it might kill fish?

I'm not sure on the fish question, maybe someone else can help with that. I've never put salt in with guppys, tetra or clown loaches and they have been fine.

But as for the filter media I wouldn't be changing it every month, that's just the booklet trying to rob more money out of you in my eyes . It will be fine for a long time before it needs changing.

Hope this helps, and good luck with the new tank :good:

Thats great thanks schottayB it helps alot.

Yeah thats what I thought about the salt.

yeah rinsing out the filter media with old tank water when doing a water change is the only maintenance u want to do with those filters. when they start falling apart is when u actually want to replace them.

you would only put salt in ur tank if ur fish specifically needed brackish or marine type water. otherwise dont bother with it.

Most of your beneficial bacteria is in that cartridge. A good rince is all you need unless it is falling apart. As for salt... you don't need it unless you are battling ich.
