i currently have a fluval 304 running with 2 chambers filled with sintered glass due to its high pourousity. I'm getting ready to replace it as it's been a while but cannot find anywhere that stocks it (is it still used?) what sould i be looking at for a suitable replacement. Whilst on the subject - what media combinations do people tend to use?

sintered glass is a high pourouisity material that is used for biological filtration as it has a very high seurface area (due to pourous nature). I use it after the foam prefilter and before a final thin layer of filter wool (to polish water).

How often do people replace their media? I've had this stuff for years (some came with filter) and never changed it.

yeah we rarely change ours. it houses your bacteria colony so replacing it must be done very carefully and it can cause chaos in your tank. we change sponges only when they're falling apart. got some that are 5 years old and still going strong.

I've got a 305 with Fluval pre filter material in one layer and biomax filter material in another. These are both ceramic tubes about 1" long and seem ok. The pre filter stuff is slightly cheaper and designed to catch anything the foam missed!

The top trayis for carbon or polishing floss should I need them.

There's an online shop who sells sintered glass media but I've never bought from them before. They have an ebay shop called aquaramaaquatics as well.
