Filter media for plants???

My girlfriend just got a new Eclipse 12 tank which comes with a carbon cartridge.

Do I have to replace this?
This tank will have some live plants

When I got plants for my tank, the lfs salesperson told me to replace it as it filters out nutrients for plants.

I don't in my planted tanks, but you always run a risk of something going wrong, but very low odds on that.

Anything I should replace the carbon with?
I think I can just snap the cartridge open and replace it with something else...

nothing just leave it empty

You can use seachems purigen if you want. This stuff leaves all of the things you want.

I always replace my carbon with either bioballs or some other bacterial material.
