Okay I've managed to narrow down my list to these filters now I just need help choosing one. Price isn't the problem I need to know which is the best for biological, mechanical I suppose chemical isn't as important. This is for a 55 gallon tank. I'm not sure if my LFS has the Ecco or Classic Eheim. I choose these because I've heard good things and my LFS has them and the prices are pretty close to online.

Eheim Professional II Model 2026 = $159.99 US
Eheim Professional Wet/Dry 2227 = $179.99 US
Eheim Ecco 2236 = $94.99 US
Rena FilStar XP2 = $79.99 US

Theoretically the wet/dry would be best for biological filtration - However I feel they are best used in conjunction with another filter to remove debris.

I personally would go for the Pro2, they are very well made and perform superbly. They also have the advantage of being self-priming.

Thats good too it's cheaper I figured it would be overkill with the Wet/Dry but I just wanted to see. I want an eheim really too because I've heard they last a long time and are good quality.

I have a 2026 Pro on a 65 gallon, and can't say enough good things about it. I've heard about people having some problems with the wet-drys, usually getting them to go through the fill & refill cycle properly, especially as they get dirty. They are also supposed to be a bit more noisy. The 2026 is practically silent.

I've got an ECCO 2231 on a 20 long. It's a good filter, but nowhere near the quality or length between maintainance intervals of the 2026. It's real quiet too, I think all the Eheim cannisters are.

Can't comment on the Rena, as I've never had one. All my cannisters are Eheims, a 2222 & a 2224 besides the Pro & the little ECCO. They all run great, everything in life should work so well.

BTW, those are really good prices. glad to see you have a lfs that doesn't charge an arm & a leg.

Well petsmart doesn't have them so I'm just going to order it online, i have to get a heater for my 10 gallon anyway so no big deal.

The Wet/Dry filters are great for Biological, but do practically no mechanical filtration, so need another filter to back them up. Also as another member said, they are more noisy than a standard filter. I have one running alongside a Rena XP3 which is a great filter, but I would put it alongside an Eheim Ecco in terms of useability etc.
I've never used an Eheim ProII (the only one on that list that i don't own!!) but from what I've been told, they are just the same as the classic range just with a few more bells and whistles like self priming etc.
Of that list I would go for the Ecco, or the Pro II.

I have just this very day brought an
eheim professional 2224 set (comes with media)
for £114.99

I have an eheim classic 2213 and am very happy with ehiem.
