Filter help

I have 3 tanks two have fluval filters ,they pump out across the top of the aquarium,tanks look really nice,the other tank we bought of s0omeone it had a filter with it,this is it.

it pumps out below the surface,bubbles that go straight across the 4 ft tank and thats on low.

Do some filters work like that,it spoils the tank there's so many bubles

I'm presuming that the top sits above the water, can't see it too well but think i have one similar in my tank at school.

if it is similar mine has an air intake hole at the top which can be plocked with a plug supplied, this stops the bubbles, trouble is if its second hand the plug maybe missing. my suggestion ,if this is the case would be to try and block any air hole that is above the surface, or submerge the pump fully under the water.

please feel free anyone to correct me if you think this is wrong

The top is above the water with a little plug thing on it.

Do you need bubbles in a tank like that if not i'll try submerging it.

well mine's sat quite happily under the water cus even though it has the plug its not airtight, so i sunk it.

its been running happily in my small community tank for a year and seems to be doing ok

What you're getting is a venturi effect. Fast moving water will suck in any air that might get into the water circulation. If it doesn't look nice, you can turn it off, being a 4 ft tank, I doubt it needs any aeration (surface area will be enough). Also, if you plug/submerge it to turn off the air bubbles, the flow rate will increase a lot too. HTH

I've submerged it, no bubbles now.

I thought I had to have all those bubbles to aerate it

no, its all about the movement on the suface, i think?

What if there's no bubbles and no movement on the surface,the filter I've submerged it points down so the surface is calm

Getting worried here now

The fish will be ok with the filter facing down.
All that you need is the filter to be working for the fish poop to get desposed of.
Or if you are so worried that you want movement on the top.
Get a power head.
Cheap about £10 - £20 try them out.
