Filter Help Please

today, a good friend of mine bought a new tank off ebay, which came with a interpet ipf duo 3 filter which he kindly donated to my good self so i gave it a good clean up and decided to read the instructions and noticed that it should have a filter media container to put carbon in but it was in use without so i would like to ask what what the carbon would be used for and if it will be needed for the filter to work properly? grateful for any advice - thanks.

Carbon is used to remove medications, not needed in your filter if your not removing medication.

I know carbon removes medications but does it not also remove other chemicals aswell i.e. possible harmful ones??

I dont think so, as most people leave it out if they arent ending a medication in a tank.

Carbon will remove quite a few chemicals.... but if you havnt added anything ! there wont be much to remove !

the carbon is always left in my tank, it cleans the water chemically, thats is what it states on the box in comes in.

carbon pretty much takes most of the impurities out of the water. i dont use it cause itll remove my blackwater
