Can anyone recommend a filter for a 55 gallon tank? I'm upgrading from a 15 gallon to a 55 gallon tank and will be using a sand substrate.

I was looking at the aquaclear ones at petco today and they seemed pretty good. I will prolly get a filter rated for at least a 70-75 gallon aquarium as I like to have over filtetration. I've had bad luck with the bio-wheel models in the past so I'm trying to stay away from them.

I'm using a whisper 15-30 gallon internal filter in my 15 gallon tank atm and I'm not really fond of it as I have to keep the water line lower than I would like in my tank.

Also are the canister filters really that good to justify the $100+ price tag on them?

I run pretty much nothing but AC's on my tanks. The AC 70 would work well on that tank.

Canister filters hold a large quantity of media, and are very flexable with the different types of media you can use. They are better at bio filtration then hob filters due to the amount of media they contain. They work well with larger tanks stocked with messier fish. I like to combine them with a hob set up for mechanical filtration.

AC's are probably the most flexable hob as far as media they can use. Since they don't use cartridges, you can combine sponges, floss, bio media, or whatever you need.

*edit* Buy the filter you choose online, they are much cheaper! :)
