Since having my Juwel I've never had a filter system that used this 'floss' type thing that sits on the top of the built in filter at the back of my Juwel .

I got 3 spare floss pads with the tank, and I'm just wondering when you replace these and what are they actualy for? The one I have in at the moment is falling apart a bit and rather black lol.

Thanks :D

I hardly ever replace sponges, just clean them a little...if this is filter floss to catch fine particles, it would need replacing as and when it deteriorates (as it loses its use).

It's not the sponges. I'd never replace them . It's the white (well was white many months ago!) flossy / wooly looking stuff that sits on the top of my stack of sponges in the filter.

Thsi stuff would need more frequent replacing imo...as and when really, when it turns black and degraded might be a good time ;-)

This is a photo of the box I got with the tank: http://www.aquarium-products.co.uk/upload/media/Aquatics/Indoor/filters/Filter_wool.jpg

Guess I will replace it when I do a W/C at the weekend then :good:

I change my juwel filter floss pad about every 2 weeks but I spose it can be longer, just check when it looks full of dirt.

I dont use any floss at all in the external filter so i only need to touch that when the flow rate drops.

i tried running floss recently. After two weeks my flow had dramatically dropped so I cleaned the filter out - floss fell to bits and I had to bin it.

Dont bother with it now.

I brought the tank seccond hand so he gave me the 3 spare floss pads. I'll just use them till they are gone, doubt I'll keep buying more if they are lasting a week or two each lol.

Can't say I've ever used them in any other filters I've used

If it was actual filter "floss" then you wouldn't need to replace it at all, until it falls apart which would take years. The "pads" get clogged up every 4 weeks for me and I just replace them. Depending on how far apart the holes in the pad are will correspond to what size of particle it will catch. You by no means have to use it at all. I stopped using the fine filter pads because they caused my FX5 to produce thousands of micro bubbles if they weren't changed out every week or so. What a waste of money IMO.

May as well use the freebie stuff I got with it, won't be buying more to replace it once it's all gone ;)

May as well give it a try seeing as I have it in the cabinet

I have to change mine once a week, they get really filthy

How much would you say you spend on them in a year? And does it make much of a change in the tank?

They are under £3 for a pack of 5 at the lfs. I find it keeps the tank clearer, the filter floss is used to catch most of the gunk in the tank rather than it clogging the rest of the media in the filter, changing regular, before it breaks down and becomes useless, keeps the rest of the filter much cleaner.

Mine really does get filthy, if i leave them two weeks they fall apart

I'll use what I have and see if I notice anything. Need to take the one thats in there out this weekend, there must only be just over half of it left!
