I'm only a beginner too, but, I would say it depends on stocking levels and size of tank.

I have a small-ish tank (15G UK) which is slightly overstocked so I clean my filter regularly (once/twice a week) as I need to to keep the water quality high.

Someone with a larger tank and is understocked will give a different answer...

For the Power filters I clean them once a month on average and for the canisters once every 6 months. Media is only replaced when it basically doesn't stay together anymore.

Just to point out, if you have a cannister filter (or any other actually...) I would recommend cleaning any mechanical only media out under a chlorinated tap. The extra pressure will help clear the debris and allow the mechanical media to do what it is doing best.

Your tank has a fair amount of mollys for a 10gal making it overstocked (although not a lot, its still an issue i think you should adress at some point soon), so i would suggest you give your filter sponges a quick rinse in tank water from water changes in a bucket every 10days or so- remember not to over clean the filter sponges though, just remove the worst of the gunk/muck so the filter runs well but not too much so you could risk over-cleaning it and causing the tank to mini cycle .

My filters tell me when they need to be cleaned. When the flow starts to slow down, they are due for a clean.

Although relitavely slow growers, mollys can grow anything between 3-5inches long, and are quite active fish you see, so can get quite big and active for a 10gal. Generally speaking, its advised you don't have anything more than 2 female mollys for a 10gal. If you want males, or 2 females and a male, you need a 15gal, and pretty much 3-5gals per molly for anymore after that. If you keep a mixed gender group you need 2-3 females per male (same goes for endlers, platys and guppys) or 5 males minimum for an all-male group to disperse agression and help prevent bullying as they can be quite feisty towards each other .

Most tetra species that grow between 1 and 2inches can go in a 10gal, although you need a minimum of 5-6 in each species/type- but your tank can only really hold one or 2 species/types at the most depending on what other sorts of fish you have in there .
