I was changing mine every month, but I was over feeding and have a small filter. Now I rinse it in old water once a month and change it only when the rinsing doesn't work (about every 2 to 3 months).

Hi Magnolia_360 :)

Guppygirly is right. Just keep rinsing it out in the water you have siphoned out of the tank. If it has charcoal in it, you can empty that out (it's not needed anyway) and keep using the filter media until it falls apart.

By using the same thing over and over, you are keeping your beneficial bacteria. Every time you change cartridges the bacteria has to reestablish itself, so you are better off to keep the same one going. Just be sure to use old tank water and not fresh tap water.

It can last a very long time that way. :D

ok thanks I guess I better ger to cleaning out my filter cartridge
Just make sure, as the other posters mentioned, that you are rinsing it out in old, siphoned tank water.

I rinse my filter media out every time I do a water change, so about once/week. Might as well!
