Filter Being A Pain

My canister (Like this one, only older and not under warranty) is acting up on me. It is a magnetic driven motor.

Heres what it does. I break it down, put it back together, prime it, turn it on, runs fine for a minute, then shuts off. It makes a sound like something is caught in it. Although after breaking it down twice I have found that there is nothing clogging it.

I am completely out of ideas at this point and am open to any ideas you guys might have. As of this moment my tank is not being filtered and has not been since yesterday evening.

Try taking the motor off the casing and turning it on. Then see if the impellor is spinning freely. It could be a problem with the impellor shaft that runs down the middle of the impellor.
You can also try setting the filter up and running it without any media in. Then if it still does it at least you know it isn't something clogging it up.
Air bubbles are the most common problem.
When you set it up have the intake hose in the tank and the return hose in a bucket next to the filter. Suck on the return hose and get the water syphoning into the filter. Leave it to fill up the filter and then start flowing out the return hose into the bucket. Give the filter a gentle shake while this is happening to dislodge any airbubbles. Once the filter is full and the bucket has filled up, put the return hose back in the tank and turn the filter on. See what happens. The bucket of water can be poured back into the tank.
If it still doesn't work properly it could be the motor is playing up and needs replacing.

a bust seal is also a possibility, allowing air to get into the filter. If Colins advise doesn't work, apply lots of vaseline to any and all seals. If this fixes it, order replacement seals before they fail completely
