I have recently set up a 4ft aquarium and have a filter, (previously when I kept tropical fish I ha an undergravel filter). My tank is planted with lots of plant and my questions are:-

1. Do I ned a seperate pump to provide oxygen or will there be enough from the filter and plants?

2. How often should I clean the gravel when the tank is up and running?

Thanks to anyone who replies.

Undergravel filters are not usually recommended when keeping a planted aquarium. They interfere with root growth/development. Vacuum the gravel with a gravel vac/syphon every time you do a partial water change, preferably weekly.

It's up to you if you want to add extra aeration, once a week you do a gravel vac.

Aeration in itself doesn't provide oxygen IIRC, it is surface disturbance which helps dissolve oxygen. Therefore if increasing aeration increases the disturbance then you get more oxygen. Do you need it though? Unless fish are gasping for air then all it will do is encourage algae.
