I just recently got a tank, 2.5 gallon, (1 wk. ago) and got five small guppies. Today, one of the larger ones was lethargic and the others started picking on her. I removed her from the tank and put her in a temporary holding cup. She is bleeding from her left fin and I don't know what to do with her. I don't know much about fish! I need help!

he was starting to chase after my bala sharks as well, I didnt want to see my other fish develop ich because of him

any suggestions on how i can have a safe community with the betta in the tank?

I wouldent know what to do when a fish is injured, i would keep her in a safe emergency pail or maybe another tank untill she is healthy, then maybe retry her in the tank, maybe you need more of that breed of fish, so they will stop going after just one particular fish

Ummm, i think that tank is alittle overstocked, 5 guppies in a 2.5 gallon tank is not a good idea at all. They grow too big, and produce too much poop and babies.

Her injured fin is most likely a result of fighting between females, and too little space.

I would suggest you take the guppies back to the store you got them from and get a betta . Or get atleast a 10 gallon tank instead.

In a 2.5 gallon tank you could have a betta, possibly with 2 julli cories or an apple snail. Nothing else is really suitable.

Sorry, hope it helps.

(If the guppy still has a ripped fin add about 1tsp of AQUARIUM salt to the tank per 5 gallons).

P.S Colin...2 bala sharks in a 15 gallon doesn't sound like a good idea either. they grow too big. And bettas aren't normally too aggressive, although it depends on the indiviual, normally you don't keep bettas with guppies or fin nippers or gouramis.

Sorry to hear what's happened to your guppies but I agree with the above member.

Your tanks sounds overcrowded in terms of space never mind waste levels. You could perhaps keep 2 males in there but I am not sure as I ave never kept guppies and so I am ot sure about potential size.

As angelicdeity said, you could keep a betta with a couple of cories. However, I would suggest pygmy cories if you can get them as these only grow to 1".

Good luck.
