Fighter Fish

Can anybody help me out with my fighter fish. He was in a friend's the tank with a turtle and lost half of his body, so I took him to mine to see if I could help him. he is doing well now tho, it was a few months back. But I can't tell if it's male or female,l will post a pic.

Half his body? Or half his tail?
 
If he has (or at least, had) a large tail, then almost certainly he's a he.
