Hey would this be a good setup for a Fiddler Crab?? I am getting them because I heard they are great scavengers. I have the glass containers really sturdy and they will not fall. I will put somthing on top of the container so they will be able to be fully out of the water. I am wondering if the fish will eat the crab or if the crab will eat the fish. I keep my water at 82 degrees F, and I do use non Iodide salt for my fish. Well let me know what you think.

#1 - Fiddler crabs need brackish water
#2 - They can't climb glass
#3 - They really don't belong in aquariums

1: I put 11 table spoons of salt into my tank.
2: I have read where you can keep them with mollies
3: I am going to put plants around the glass so they can climb it.

What do you have in there anyways?

Most fiddler crabs are pretty peaceful, but they will get defensive if something picks at it.

I have in 1 Parrot fish. He isnt really big yet but he is 6 inches. I have in a Green Severum and he is around 7 inches. I have 4 Silver Dollars and they are about the roundness of a Coffe Cup. I have two smaller kissing fish at 4 inches. And a DoJo Loach (spelling). My only concern is that he may pinch one of my fish when they are resting at the bottom. When I have my lights off they lay at the bottom like they are sleeping. My Dojo is always at the bottom also. How good of climbers are they. Could one climb up plants? Or if I wraped tubing around the top jar he may can get up to it. The only reason I want one is because I have heard they will keep the bottom of your tank clean. I Have read that they will stay under the water more if it is warm enough.

Looks like you got some freshwater fish. Fiddler crabs would ideally need sea salt for brackish water, which your fish can't handle. They are very good climbers, if there's a way up, they'll get there. As for their actual "cleaning" ability, they can pick at little nooks and crannies, but they can poop a lot on the other hand.

I think you should look for other options if you need a scavenger.

Yeah I am looking for a good scavenger. I dont want any catfish because they EAT fish. I cant use any Ghost Shrimp because my Severum would probally eat it. I am going to the Pet Store tomorrow and I may get somthing called a Clown Loach. Do you know anything about them??

oops!!!! fiddler crabs are a LAND crab!!!!!!!! it just needs water not live in it, it should be kept in a brackish tank, though the do survive in fresh water it has a big effect on the crabs life span.

...And no fish or otherwise are scavengers, they need food of their own and create even more waste than if you just did what you should and cut down on feeding until there *are* no leftovers you want scavenged... And catfish eating fish, right, so something like a cory would eat your fish but a fiddler crab wouldn't? Someone really needs to do some reading...

I used to have corys and they didnt do their job. It is not food at the bottom it is poop. Catfish DO eat your fish. Just wait till they get bigger. I had a Pleco that destroyed my Angel Fish. I know it was him because I saw him leach onto their body. I had other types of catfish that ate fish also. I am going to get somthing called a Clown Loache. They look pretty good and they dont have a HUGE mouth like most catfish.

And evidently you have no idea how to look after clown loaches, about any catfish or indeed, that no fish eat poo.

Clown loaches, live about 50 years, grow to 12" ish and need to be in groups.

Catfish, a cory with max size of a couple of inches isn't going to eat fish. Plecos are but one group of catfish.

Waste is something you and the filter takes care of, not the inhabitants. The job of a scavenger is just to eat any leftover food.

They only get to 7 inches according to elmars. I am pretty sure they can get to a foot long in a big enough tank. I have already told you that the Corys did not do their job. I kept my Corys alive for many years so I must know how to keep them. Their life tops out at 3-5 and I kept mine close to 4 years. I never said they ate fish. Allthough a mod pinned this in a thred. http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=133022

=======> "Various other cats Catfish eat fish.....aquarium fish. They grow large even tho' they are small at the lfs. One common species is the Pictus cat. Others are the channel cat and the shovelnose cat."

Most all of the catfish you see at the LFS are sharks and are not compatible to be put in with tropical fish. The only two fish I have had that didnt give me problems are the Dojo and the Cory. Now tell me names of catfish that dont eat fish. Corys and Loachs don't count. I dont mean to put you on the spot but you insulting me saying that I don't know how to keep fish really ticks me off.

I have seen my Dojo eat poop.

Fiddler crabs are obviously not suited (as you've been told, they are brackish, need their own setup with 2/3 of tank being land - also even if it wasn't for that at some point your fish would probably kill the crab).

Clown loaches need to be kept in groups of at least 3 though 5+ is better, they do live a long time (I heard approx. 30 years - though it could be longer) and they need at least a 55 gallon tank (that is at least 4ft). they do not eat faeces.

In fact I don not know of an aqarium pet that does live on faeces, Though the odd bit will be eaten by a stupid fish or soem shrimps etc, they cannot live on it and they will add to the bio load rather than help with it.

I think you might need to rethink what you want and what you want it for. Hope that helps :D
