this is Jerome.
i got him a few days ago, he has a whole tank to himself and has alot of personality!
he was sold to me as a mayan, but reputable sources ahve told me its a male festae.
ive seen ALOT of pictures of both and i can't make my mind up!
it has characteristics of both, so im gonne need more opinions!

i took this picture when he first arived, hes alot more colourful now!
most the pictures i saw mayan didnt have colourful fins, and jerome does.
also the previous owners other fish battered him, so i think his colours may have been subdued because of the domiannce of anotehr male
hes starting to get more colourful now =)

Its a mayan cichlid.

You can tell by the position of the ocellatus on the tail.
in a red terror, its smaller, more round and higher up on the tail base.
In a mayan however, its more elongated and coversa larger area of the tail base. I woundn't say it was a hybrid, just 100% Nandopsis Urophathalmus.
Dan.

good old dany boy =P
but the colouring is off ?
i look at him right now and he looks nothing like a urophthalmus.
the only thing i can agree on is the spot on the tail.
any chance on knowing the sex ?

his fins are abit bollocks in that pic...
got a more recent pic of him coloured up?
But i will put money on it being a Urophathalmus The colour on them varies so much, its not reliable, You get them blue all the way into deep reds...

How big is that bad boy anyways? :good:

10" maybe a bit larger
really active fellow

I disagree with danny, I say Festae. there are two markers that you always look for when identifying the difference between the two. the first is: the first two dark bars for a Y. and the second being: that the spot on the peduncle usually only covers the top half

im leaning more towards festae.
that picture dosnt bring justice as its when it was stressed and new.
the fins are bright red at the tips and yellow underneath. it just looks too colourful and bright to be a mayan.
mayans have straight stripes on their body,
and most of the festae ive seen on the net the Y bar didnt totaly connect. as does my ones
one of the reasons i snatched it up was because i was sure it was a bargain, as i was after festae and this one was much cheaper.
they had some smaller mayans in too that werent in any way very resembelent of my fish.

sorry to double post but i took some more pics
i can see what you mean about the spot on the tail, its more towards the top then taking up the whole tailbase.
and it has the Y on the first two lines

Aye I know, just looks horrendous. Such a shame, the rest of the fish is really top notch.

I have to disagree, im still strongly confident that it is Urophathalmus.

If it were a Festae, then it would have the second and third bars connected in the typical 'Y' shape.
Also the eye spot on the peduncle is far to centered to be a festae...

look at the positioning of the eye spot in the festae (above) compared to that of the urophathalmus (below.)

Also, look at the 'Y' band on the festae. This appers exclusivly between the second band and the third.
I am quite confident that it is indeed a Nandopsis Urophathalmus

I agree with you. It definitely looks like a Uro to me.

I don't see the Y-bands connecting like juanvaldez said and the eye spot is way too big to be a festae, imo.

quiete the debate this =P
ok im willing to accept that its a urophthalmus. but u gotta admit its a REALLY nice one =D
and it's deffinetly a male ?
