FEMALES GETTING FAT!!

Okay, all of the female fish in my tank are apparently much smarter than the males, because when I drop in the food, they always know right away. They speed toward it and devour it before the males even have any clue that it is feeding time! This is leading to one obese guppy and one fatty platty! And the guys I don't think are getting enough food. Any suggestions on how I can make sure the boys get enough food and the girls get perhaps less? Thanks!

I think female fish, especially livebearers like guppies and paties are fatter than the maes anyway.

The way I go about letting my fish get food instead of the greedy ones scoffing it all is that I put the food in one part of the tank so the greedy ones go over and then I put food in the other side of the tank for the slower ones.

yeah, I try that, but the girls are fast and they zoom all over the whole tank, and it really takes the guys a while to realize there is even food being dropped in.

After being married for some time now. I can say with confidence.. thats just the way it is... You could try to psyc them out by making them watch TV so they believe the male should be the aggressive eater and the woman should be a skinny-in-the-watter-closet-sipper... but, fish are much less pron to social conditioning they we are...

just like humans females feed their faces, complain about getting fat, do a lot of talking about dieting and then feed their faces again.

I guess it's always possible the guppy is pregnant, but not the platty.. Plus.. after they.. *ahem*.. after they poop, they are skinny again. They seriously just eat everything in sight. I've been debating holding them on one side of the tank with a big net while the boys get a chance at some food for once.. lol. I dunno what to do.

Sounds like a good idea here. Just feed in seperate places.
If that doesnt work- try putting a piece of plastic to seperate the fish, go down about four inches and feed on either side. It might work.

My female tiger barbs are always huge because the males can't be bothered to spawn... not like they're in a bad situation either... 3 tiger barbs in a 32 gallon tank with hardly anything that isn't a bottom feeder or cave dweller in there.
