i have a 3 in female JD that is digging a spawning pit with no male JD in the tank.
she is gaurding it with her life.
no eggs yet.
why is she doing this??

Some fish just do this, I had a similar experience with some of my parents fish.
Are there any other fish in the tank? It is possible the JD is trying to breed with another species.

Its possible that one of them fish has 'paired' up with the female JD, so that could explain the digging, or she might just be digging :p

i had a female salvini and a male firemouth pair up and spawn. they even laid eggs but they went moldy and i had to scrap them out. Hybrids aren' t that uncommon.

It's just natural instinct, she may even lay eggs as well. Nothing to worry about and actually quite interesting to watch.

These pits may jsut be territorial as well as my male JD digs territory pits all over the tank and moves aroudn the tank going from pit to pit like a soldier going from mortar hole to mortar hole on the nattle field. Kind of cool to watch. Either way, most all cichlid species are diggers and re-arrange the substrate to how they like it

right now shes in a big tank with big goldfishes. =]
hes doing great no fights no dead

she should not be in a tank with goldfish. Goldfish are "cold water fish" which like anywhere from 65 to 75F for temp and jd's are cichlids which need tropical temperatures of atleast 75 to 80F. So, depending on what temp you keep the tank at, either the JD or the goldies need to go from that tank. It may be a pain to have to keep two tanks for the fish but, the wellfare of the fish should come first

WTH!!!
IMO get rid of the goldies.
Way too messy and they always get sick.
I don't really know what ppl see in them.

You could keep them & produce feeders for the JD. :hyper:
Sorry I hate gold fish. :shout:

Totally agree ox.
The only thing you might be able to keep with goldies are plecs @ that pushing it.

Goldies are way too messy to be kept with JD's who appreciate clean & warm water.
