My female yellow lab is on her second batch of eggs/fry. First time (about 3 months ago) she spat the eggs after about a week. This time round she has been holding them for about 3 weeks. She has not been eating and has her mouth closed. Earlier she actually took a pellet of food and ate it although she still has the swelling in her throat. The inside of her mouth (what I can see when she has it slightly open) is much darker then the others and I thought that perhaps it was the fry? Can they eat whilst holding, or is she giving up on them again?? :-(

Any ideas??

I had my female Auratus hold several times before she passed.. The only sucessfull time she had the fry she was eating a tiny bit. A pellet here and there.. I think its somewhat normal and nothing to worry about.. The fry are likely inside her mouth still.. If you want to give the fry the best chance i suggest isolating her as they would likely be picked off by the tank mates.. Congradulations...

Well, she is still holding, and hiding a bit more now. Yesterday when she came up to the glass to see me  I saw eyes through the slit in her mouth

Will let you know what happens.

this is great... it is normal for the female to not eat much at all for a while... soon when the fry can swim she will spit them all out for a sec and eat and suck them back in! dont worry she knows what she is doing! good luck .. and like the above person said .. move her or at least make sure that u have lots of hiding places or else some one will take her babies as a nice snack .. all her work for not!
have a good one!

Please keep us updated as to the status of the fry.. Also im curious to see how your hybrids come out.. Who knows they could be the most beautiful cichlids yet..

Well, I bought a large breeding trap today and spoke the the man who I got the fish from. Now comes the interesting part ........... How to catch her without removing my rock-art from the tank ?????

Any ideas???

Well, we had to take the rocks out and we finally managed to catch her!! She is in the breeding trap at the moment, but looks rather stressed. If she doesn't calm down I will have to try and strip her  . Any tips on how to do this as a novice? I have had one other suggestion, but dont have any toothpicks. I am worried that I will hurt her.

Any advice please.

Julia
