Hi,
Ok so I was in a fs today (one thats not that near my house) and low and behold they had female bettas! And they were all sooo pretty!
I bought only 1... I wanted more but I refrained from getting more... I will most likely go back to get more
I will post pics later but what I was wondering is if I should set up a female communtiy of bettas? I may have the room for another 10 gal (which I have) I just have to measure to make sure it will fit.... OR should I just put her in her own tank? I have a 1/2 gallon she can go in right now...
Thanks

I vote for a female betta tank...or course!!! That would be awesome!

 I would love a female betta tank as well! One more question, If I can fit the tank in my room would you advise a 5 gallon or tank gallon? Im going to check which one will fit :p
And how many bettas can fit in the 5 and 10 gallon?
Thanks :*

I've had no luck with a 5 gal female community. Go for the 10 gal and get 4-5 so the dominance is spread out among the fishies. We want pix of your new girl!!! :D

I've heard people say that you can't have a female community in a 5 gallon because there isn't enough space for them and they will become aggressive. I had 2 females in a 5.5 gallon for awhile and I did notice that they would pick fights quite often. I moved them to a 10 gallon (well, actually its divided so they only have about 7-8 gallons, but it is VERY will planted, with silk and plastic plants) and they are doing great, no nipped fins or anything. In a 10 gallon, 6 would be a good number to have.

Edit: awww...you beat me to it Elise. Oh yah, and I suggested 6 females in a 10 gallon because that is how many bettamomma has :dunno:

Ok well I just measured and the 10 gallon WONT fit... The 5 gallon on the other hand fits perfectly...
Should I try and set up a female community in the 5 gallon? I really dont want to just have 1 fish in the 5 gallon though...
Also do females need a filter and heater or are they fine without?
Thanks! :D

I know, you could divide the tank into 3, so then you don't have to worry about aggression.
You don't need a filter if you do frequant water changes, and you don't need a heater, either, if the temp stays in the 70's.

Is it ok if I put a filter though? I would rather have a filter in the tank. I also have put a heater in the tank just because I have one... :)
What type of things would she like in the tank? Its really bare at the moment...
Thanks

Oh no! She just got stuck to the filter! I unstuck her
I do remember reading about someone who put something over the end of the filter to slow the current...?...? Im unsure....

Oopsy - I posted too soon.
I got excited when I saw that you might be getting a community tank of girls. ;)

With a 5G tank, it's really hard to get a community tank that will work well. You could possibly try 3 or maybe even 4 to spread out the aggression, but that's really not enough room.

As for the filter, either take a brand new nylon sock that's been washed in JUST dechlorinated water (NO soap, etc) and wrap it around the filter, then put a rubber band around it. Or get a piece of filter sponge and stick it down inside the intake tube. That works wonders :)

Thanks bettamom! For tonight I just took the filter off because I dont want to wake up to a betta stuck to the filter... And over here its 12 am and im kinda tired...

But tomorrow I will defentally try one of thoese methods  Which method do you use on your female tanks?

I am going tpo try and put 4 females in there and see how it works out... I hope it does work out!

This has nothing to do with the females but can a male be in a tank with a filter? A disposable one? They dont have alot of current I dont think. It would be for a 2 gallon tank.

Thanks :D

Hiya, id say the best filter solution is to use an under gravel filter where possible, as it is alot more difficult for bettas to get stuck to it, or wedged between it and the glass.

if your going to try a female community tank, i think that you should make sure u could rehome them into different tanks, if they start fighting, or your be stuck with them fighting, and nowhere to move them to. alternatively, you could just make sure you have enough cups, or jars that can float inside the tank, if there are any problems ~ it helps to be prepared!

Hi,
Thanks for the advice :) I will have enough spots for them to go if there are problems. Like megthefish suggested I could always divide the tank up for them as well if there are problems  I hope there is not though.

Also what kinds of plants do they like? She just has a piece of floating wisteria in there at the moment. Tonight I will be adding some more. Also I heard they live caves?..?

How do I go about introducing more females to the tank? The tank she was in had about 15 - 20 females in it with her and I saw no fighing... I may go back when I get paid and get them from there.

They were so beautifull! To anyone who lives in Canada - I got her from the petsmart in Mississauga... Just in case anyone lives around there and is in the market for some pretty females... Out of all the store that have bettas -females and males I find these stores to be really clean when it comes to bettas :D
