to cut a long story short i purchased 2 females for my tank and there was 1 female already in there.

i heard that you were supposed to keep them in odd numbers so that's why there is 3!

but the one that was in there already is being a bit on the nippy side to the new arrivals

is there a way to stop this? like maybe move her for a bit then put her back? or rearange the tank?

or erm...?

any ideas

I'd put her in a breeding trap for a day, while you rearrange the tank, then let her out again. Also, you need more females as 3 is too low a number. I'd get at least one more, preferably 2.

thanks!

I've already put her in a breeding trap!

I'll try and move things around and if possible get some more!

It's kind of like keeping Tiger barbs. The more you have, generally the less agression there tends to be on the whole.

sounds fair enough!

thanks

she's been in the trap about 3 times now as the cheeky little thing kept on jumping out! luckily i found the lid for the trap...

just another quick question here's a pic of the female she took a nipping to: do i have to do anything special for her fins to grow back? or just have good clean water?

plus a while back the nipper in question had one of her ventral fins nipped when i was trying to breed but it hasn't grown back fully is there any reason for this of do they just take a while?

Hi

There's very little damage there so as long as the water is clean i.e. no ammonia, nitrIte, and you keep up your routine water changes it will grow back. The ventral may or may not grow back, but it wont bother her :good:

That really doesn't look bad at all. As bronze said, clean water and rest should do it.

omg the nipped female looks identical to my little pink that i lost last month. Any damage my bettas have had has always healed quickly on it's own, and as above she's not that bad so she should heal nicely. Also i never keep less than 5 females together as when i only had 3 in the tank they started bullying amoung themselves. Ohhhhh i miss pink!! and shimmer and my boys boohoo x

Yeah as advised get more females!

the odd number thing seems a weird thing to say but technically you need 5 or more to keep aggression down. How big is your tank? Also once you have more girls take them all out give the tank a clean and re arrange the decor. That way it seems like a whole new territory and they can establish themselves. if you add more females into the tank as it is the original girls will feel threatend as they have already established a pecking order and terrirtory

Yeh, I've noticed this "odd number" thing creeping in too? Whats that all about?

keep water clean, feed well (but not over feed) and a bit of anti fin rot meds cant hurt. the ventral will likely never grow back. my lil yellow marble male who just spawned was rescued from a tank full of pk males and he is missing half one of his ventrals, its never grown back, but as he has just spawned, it shows they are not affected by it.

I was told by someone on here i'm sure! It does sound weird but i thought they knew what they were talking about lol

so if i get say 3 more that would be okay?

ps its a 28g in my sig

holding my hand up here :( When I said keep odd numbers, I meant in quite a large number, not 3. I was looking along the lines of 5 or even 7 (no pun intended<<<).

They will grow back eventually but may not be as 'full' finned. My red VT ramjet got a good flogging from Pinky and his fins were terrible afterwards. It took months of clean water and a dose of melafix to get his fins back to normal. They are not as simetrical and even as they were when we got him but he still looks amazing to me.
