Hi,

I have a 5g tank with 3 female bettas in. I know that this may be abit small but originally I was only going to get 1 male but you know how it is...went in the lfs and there they were and before I knew I had bought them.

Anyway I am getting a 15g tank soon so they will have a lovely big home. Now my question is - I know that with male bettas you have to be careful of what tank mates you place with them cos a) the bettas may eat them and b)the other fish may fin nip but does this also apply to females.

Any suggestions for suitable tank mates would be appreciated. Personnally I would love to add some cherry and amano shrimp but don't want them to be lunch.

In my limited experience, males and females are both equally as evil territorial. In fact, my female betta is 3x worse than my male: she's mean, fast, strong, unburdened by long flowy fins, and a flat out big fish. In her 20g home, she leaves most of her tankmates alone. When I had her in a 10g, she tried to kill anything that moved.

When you move the girls to a bigger tank you should get at least one more, as females shouldn't be in groups of less then 4 (it helps to spread out their aggression) I wouldn't personally put shrimp in with them, I had ghost shrimp in my community tank, which contained platies, guppies, cories and 1 male betta and the male made snack of 11 of them. Ummm good tankmates for females would be cories, platies, african dwarf frogs, maybe a couple snails. In my "sorority tank" I have 6 females bettas, an african dwarf frog, a Juli Cory and an Emerald Cory. Hope I helped :D :D

Hi,

Thanks to you both for your replies.

Its funny cos my girls look so innocent as they glide around their tank, you would think butter wouldn't melt. However when you look at them up close they have this sort of expression that says 'little devil in disguise'.

As sson as they are in their new tank, I will go back at purchase another female. I am glad you say platies are ok cos I have some in my community tank. It is getting slightly crowded in there, so I can maybe transfer some across.
