Felix's First Planted 15G

So i've set up my inlet and spraybar, courtesy of obtaining a hacksaw to trim my eheim pipes.
How important is it for the spraybar to be as long as it can be?

I tried setting up the spraybar in two ways, one with a much shorter length of pipe than the other, but much neater looking IMO.
Shorter length:

Longer length (worried about that slight kink in the hose-line):

Is it ok to have the heater at that angle? It's too tall for the tank really. It'll stand almost upright but has to have the foot buried in the substrate like this:
tank011.jpg

Is that a no no?

At an angle it would be fine. I prefer mine at an angle because it covers more space and is covering a wider volume of water for heating.(at least in my mind :p) Personally I think it allows for a more stable and steady heating as opposed to completely vertical.

I now possess an empty, sparkling clean tank!

I carefully emptied out the eco-complete, and then took vinegar and a razor blade to the glass and got it pretty #40## clean.

I then filled it up to check the seals were all in tact, all looking good so far!

I have ordered off of www.plantedtanks.co.uk some plants:

1x Vallis rubra bunch
1x Amazon sword bunch
1x Anubias barteri var. nana
1x Java fern bunch
2x echinodorus tenellus (pygmy chain sword) bunches
1x amazon frogbit bunch.

I've also got some Xmas moss off of the classified section on this forum.

Along with the plants i already have, i think this will be my layout:

The deed is being done this weekend. I'll need to drain my 28L, and tranfer the fish/shrimps/nerites into a bucket in the tankwater.
Then remove the gravel, scoop out the mulm, place the mulm and gravel into the new tank. Then place the eco-complete on top. THEN plant.
Then install the new eheim 2213 (need to work out how to do that actually), fill the tank, add the stock.

SIMPLE!?!

I wish i'd read the email from plantedtanks.co.uk properly :(

I was expecting my plants this weekend, turns out they won't be arriving til end of next week. A WHOLE week more to wait til i can set the tank up now, BOO! :grr:

why what's is the problem with Plantedtanks?

Nothing wrong with them. I just didn't do my homework or read the confirmation email they sent me. They import their plants from singapore which i hadn't read up on. Here's what the email said (i placed my order last monday, expecting my plants by the weekend):

"Our order process is as follows, and all timings are approximate.

All orders placed placed before Thursday 4pm will be sent to the suppliers
at 5pm GMT to the suppliers in Singapore.
The following Monday we receive confirmation of the consignment - what has
been packed and what is missing. We notify you of any issues.
Monday PM / Tuesday AM the plants are checked by DEFRA at UK Customs. We
notify you of any issues.
Tuesday PM we receive the plants and put them in a fertiliser bath which
is also used to remove any nasties such as snails etc.
Wednesday we pack and ship your orders to you. We notify you when Royal
Mail has collected your order.
Thursday - your order should arrive by Royal Mail recorded delivery.
Friday - If your order has not arrived - Please let us know as soon as
possible so we can trace it by the tracking number."

it didn't take that long when i ordered from them. They should make that more visible on the website.

Hmm they probably should. I've heard nothing since that confirmation email 6 days ago. I assume everything's okay.

So!

This saturday just passed i was finally able to set up my new tank! Took me from lunchtime into late saturday night, did NOT expect it to take so long!

Since the new tank was going in the same spot the old one was, it wasn't such a simple transfer job, since i had to totally break down the first tank before i could even start setting up the new one.

It's taken this long to set up since i was waiting for my plants to arrive from plantedtanks.co.uk. These are what i got:

1x bunch Vallisneria Rubra:
newtank006.jpg

2x bunch of Echinodorus tenellus (pygmy chain sword, not actually that pygmy...)
newtank005.jpg

1x bunch java fern
newtank004.jpg

1x bunched amazon sword (actually two rosettes)
newtank003.jpg

1x Anubias barteri 'nana'
newtank002.jpg

1x amazon frogbit plant

This was the old tank in its usual spot, with the Eheim 2213 sat below, ready for the new tank to be set up.

I bought some zeolite to help with the fish-in cycle and help fight any potential algal blooms (recommended in the PARC), and put it as the last stage in the filter process:

The breakdown began, with the danios (and some trumpet snails) in their temporary home:
newtank013.jpg

The breakdown took longer than expected since i couldn't find all of my assassin snails in the gravel to start with.
My crypt wendtii took a long time to come away from the undergravel plate too, since it had seriously made itself at home!

Finally free

Also out of the tank came three crypt willisii plants:
newtank020.jpg

Once everything was out, i was left with all the lovely mulm at the bottom:
newtank029.jpg

This all went to form the bottom layer of my new tank's substrate, with the hope that my new plants will love it (my crypt certainly did!)
newtank033.jpg

On went the soft plastic netting to prevent the top substrate layer falling through and maxing with the gravel. The netting is soft enough to let roots through.

On went the top layer of eco-complete

With that done, next up was planting. Attaching my anubias to the desire rock was quite tricky, but i used superglue gel and it worked out ok.
newtank038.jpg

Only problem was that the rock was at a different angle when i attached it to how it is now in the tank, so the anubias is on the wonk :(

Final planted article:

I kept the old tank water in buckets so there wasn't too much of a shock to the livestock, whcih made up about 50%. I had quite a job fiddling about with all the wires and filter piping so that it wouldn't show on the other side of the tank. The eheim piping was pretty stiff so i soaked it briefly in boiling water and it softened up a treat.

Here's the finished article:

I also installed some blue LEDs in the hood, here's a pic but the water was still a bit cloudy!
newtank044.jpg

It was an exhausting day's work but thoroughly satisfying. It's been running 2 days now and is doing ok, although i'm going to need advice with the fert regime. I've done a couple of 50% water changes already, the ammonia reading was already at 0.25ppm on the API kit both times. I've already noticed a lot of leaves beginning to yellow though, and i've had a HELL of a job trying to get the plants to stay in the substrate. All of my vallis stems uprooted, as did my amazon sword so i've gone for the lead weight option for the time being.

Ferts are TPN+ (1ml per 10L) after every water change, can't decide if i really need to dose with Seachem Flourish Excel, since the lighting is pretty low (1x 12"-8W-T5 bulb for 24" long tank...)

Very nice! :good:
only thing I would do is move the Amazon Sword to the back and the Moss to the front.

looks good Felix, get a pic from the other side as well. :good:

Just remember that TPN+ will register on you test kit as it has an ammonium source. Is the zeolite the last contact before the outlet?

Thanks guys. yep Ian, the zeolite is the last port of call, its in the net bag on top of all the other media in the filter pic.
with regards to the amazon sword carlovel, the tank is viewed from both sides so there isn't really a front or back. I'll post a pic from the other side soon.

Ian should I keep dosing ferts with the w/cs then? good to know my amm levels aren't TOO high then!

Felix, I have a question about the netting: did you buy that in an lfs? Is it especially for aquariums? It looks a bit like the netting used for mandarines or oranges to me...
The netting's leftover/offcut from my dad's pond filter which has been running for years with no problems. I asked him if it was safe. I guess its kind of similar to fruit netting, although its much sturdier. The mesh is pretty fine but soft enough to part under pressure from growing roots.
