I was reading through my aquarium book today and was reading up on different foods.

Mainly natural foods to be honest.

I noticed that it said you can feed the fish woodlice?!

has anyone ever done this!?

What other bugs or *natural* foods have people given their fish?

Thanks

I wouldn't try woodlice really. Their hard exoskeleton seems like it would prove tricky to deal with unless they were young and fed to something with a big enough mouth.

I sometimes give my fish washed earthworms from our compost bin. I chop bigger worms into tiny manageable pieces ( not for the squeamish ) and the tiny baby worms I feed whole as they are about the size of a bloodworm anyway . The fish go beserk for them.

In the warm summer months you can try to cultivate mosquito larvae by either getting a water butt, or leaving a bucket of water ( preferably rainwater ) in a sunny spot for a few weeks.

You can also get kits for hatching brine shrimp.

Fruit flies are good to feed, and there are wingless types so they don't fly away when you feed them. Cultures can be bought at any scientific supply store or from the biology departments a some schools/colleges.

during summer i caught mosquito larvae and my fish went crazy for them, it looked cool when i larva would be swimming and then a fish would come from below and snag it.

my frend fed her oscar a pork chop

its 12yrs old righ now and still kicking!

okay i might try earthworms as i have a compost bin at home which could be good :)

Anything else people have fed them?

Oscar i could imagine eating a chop quite happily :D haha

There is a very good way to get all those little squiggly things,in the summer just get a mixing bowl, fill it with water, put a small bit of fruit on the edge and then just wait until bugs lay there little larvae.you can also find blood worms in polluted ponds(wash them first). Also Ithink you have to look out for dragon fly nymphs, although I'm not sure,I have been told to keep them away from baby newts and either way it is probably better if you don't put them in youre tank

A dragonfly or damsel fly nymph is a baby fish eater. It is best kept far away from an aquarium although they sometimes show up in a pond.

Thanks guys i will avoid the lavae of dragon fly!
