Hello all,

What would you say is the typical diet of a Central American Cichlid in the aqaurium ? Are Hikari any good ? Any advice will be appreciated greatly.

Cheers. :)

Which cichlid/cichlids are you specifically talking about?

Hikari gold will be fine I think, any food for cichlids should be (I've seen hikari gold for koi, so just thought I'd mention it).
I would say a typical diet would be a staple of pellet (say hikari gold for example) with the occasional treat of worms, muscle, prawn, krill, crickets, silversides and veg etc.

Thanks Shroob. Its going to be a Sajica/T Bar Cichlid. There are lots of general guidelines on the web as to feeding them, but i always prefer getting a wide range of advice (as anyone knows by reading my posts on many many forums!). So its good quality pellets like Hikari, bits of veg and some frozen food then. Id like to hear what everyone feeds thier CAs, its not a subject i hear much about.

My sajica get fed- Hikari Gold, Hikari cichlid staple, tetra prima, Hikari algae wafers, JMC catfish pellets, peas, cucumber, courgette, lettuce, bloodworms, krill, brineshrimp, daphina, glassworm and frozen prawns, I'm sure there are a few things I've missed.

They eat anything and produce large spawns and show good colours. I use a mix of food so if I ever run out of something I can always feed them something else, also it helps bring them into good condition for spawning feeding frozen food etc.

That diet is the same for most of my tanks, though I do add other things like flake to other tanks which also have CA cichlids in and they do eat that.

Hi JayJay. Thats a great menu for your lucky fish ! Im sure they are very pleased and are in top condition. I suppose its just like us humans, variety of the diet is good for you. :good:

I agree that variety is a good idea. Though I can see the point of the argument about how fish food has been designed to fulfill all the needs of our fish. I just find a variety is good for the well being of the fish.
