as above i an new and not sure how to feed them peas obv you dont put the whole pea in lol
just the centre or mash them up n put a bit in ect?

found my awnser on the net :p
anyways stupid neon dwarf rainbowfish couldn't eat them before they hit the bottom and they wont take food from the bottem so i had to get the peas out again will chop them even smaller next time

I'd like to know too - how do you feed mashed shelled peas without messing up the tank? Impossible to scoop up uneaten pea fragments !!!surely?

When I feed peas, I cook them first, remove the shell, then mush up the insides and put it in the tank. Mine never reach the bottom though, so no clean up.

Hello, I am realitivly new to fish, and the feeding pea thing too. But what I do is thaw enough peas for the fish for the week (I feed peas twice a week), then shell them and mash them up really really small, almost baby food consistancy. I have recently started blending them up in my blender using a little bit of garlic juice, I find I get a better even constancy doing it this way, when I would mash them with a fork I found I would get some peices that were to big for the fish. Anyway, I then take enough peas for the tank (I have 3 tanks) using the handel of a spoon or fork and put it into the tank, I try to point the handel down to the area where I would ultimately want the peas to fall (i.e avoiding plants etc) for easier clean up later, it works pretty good for me. It also helps if you turn off you filter, powerhead and airstone (if you have one) that will help prevent the peas being spread all over the tank via the currents those thing can create. Basically as soon as the peas hit the water they start to sink and the mash starts to break apart, which is very messy. I really only feed enough so that I won't have left overs, it took a few rounds to figure out exactly how much that was but now I have it figured out so that I really don't have left overs. Now in the off chance that I do have left overs I will use my gravel vacc to suck them out of the tank, much easier than trying to get them out with a net. Now I have sand so the peas (and other dirt) pretty much just stay on top so it is very easy to see them and suck them out with out sucking out too much water. But with gravel this might be a little more difficult to do as the peas may fall between the gravel peices. But if you clean the gravel in the general area where the peas fell then you should be able to clean most of them out, espically if you have turned off your filter, just long enough for the fish to eat, so that the current hasn't spread the peas everywhere. Now I do feed peas twice a week, but only do water changes once a week, so I currently have it set up that I will feed the peas the day before the water change that way if I miss any I know I will be doing a water change the next day anyway. The other day I feed peas is in the middle of the week, now I ususally try to feed a little less peas that day to ensure that I don't have leftovers, but again, using the gravel vac method and turning the filter (and anything else that causes current) off I can usually clean them up pretty quickly without loosing too much tank water.

Hope that helps.

Don't really know don't do it any method like that, what I do is take peas shell and all, spinach, other greens I won't mention sorry its a secret recipe ^^ add some meat to the mix Not beefheart neither stuff like krill, cooked shrimp I then mix it with my blender oh how aweful it smells, than I bake it on sheets in the oven how rotten of a smell throughout the entire house, then it goes directly into a freezer till it is frozen then I break it up into peaces, I then in turn feed to all my fish. Ever since doing this I end up with TONS of food and really healthy fish and this is what I feed them on a regular basis, they get supplemented with bloodworms, brine shrimp and pellets, so when I measure out the weight in food 5lbs would be 5lbs of solid food with NO water ^^

That is a really awesome idea :good: But I wish you would share the recipe, I would love to try it

That's a great way to do it shadow. I used to use a similar method when I was growing out discus, and they loved it. I suspect however that these guys/girls are trying to get just vegetables in their diet or possibly to relieve constipation (peas are good at that too.) But home made fish food is way cheaper and better quality than most store bought brands.

maybe people who do this could put a thread together with simple plain ingredients and method and people could add what they want to mix to make it there own ect

god sake dont cook them. they have little enough value raw. i use frozen, thawed peas. i just pop them out of their skins and drop them in. i have never had to retrieve any, so don't know how to deal with that. if you feel your fish can only handle "cooked" veg, use tinned (check the salt though). even "par boiling" has a drastic effect on nutritional value. as anybody trained in nutrition will attest.

well the little bit they had was from boiled ones tbh there was no need to feed them peas anyway i just wanted to see if they liked them for future and reference

Well, when I say cooked I was talking about blanching them to soften them up a bit. I should have been more clear. I tried just thawing them out, but the insides were kinda tough and hard to mash.

don't get me wrong, no harm will come however you feed them (peas). their just more nutritious fresh/frozen or tinned. same goes for any veg.

i used to love watching the gurami playing (tidily winks) with the pea half's. bouncing them until they could get hold of them and swim off eating.
