For those of you that feed your fish fresh veggies, how long do you usually leave the veggies in the tank. I've read anywhere from 12 to 24 hours, but seemed a bit much to me.

If it's spinach or lettuce, I'd say less than six hours because they break apart really easily. I left a piece of boiled spinach in my tank and there were tiny pieces of it scattered everywhere on the ground! It took me six 4-quart bucketfuls of water to get most of it out.

Zucchini is also pretty good for suckerfish. Just take off the skin and remove the seeds. Use a veggie clip or weight to keep it in one spot. I'd say that could stay a maximum of six hours if you decide to boil it, but it should be ok for a day otherwise.

oo wich fish like carrots?

Actually to my surprise all the fish in my 55 were munching on it at one time or other.
I had originally put it in for the plecos to see if they would eat it.
I believe the plecos ate the majority and the other took at least a courtesy bit or two.

I leave my food in overnight. I put it in in the evening and take out what's left in the morning. That way my night time fishes get some too.

Mine love cucmber and lettuce! You should see the holes my clown loaches put in the lettuce, I can't imagine what they'll do whan they are bigger!!

By the way, I don't tkae the skin off, I think it keeps the cucumber together better. I just push a stone through the middle.

If im not mistaken alot of the nutritional value is in the skins of most veggies, at least as far as people eating veggies. I usually dont peel mine for the fish either.

So when you feed carrots do you boil it or just drop the whole thing in there?

I'm afraid that the books I read would differ on the nutritional value of the skin. All of the books that have addressed this topic have said that the skin should come off b/c it's relatively worthless.

The thing about them being good for us is true when it comes to fruits like apples, though. :D

I don't think the sjin is especially good for the fish, that never occured to me  I just think it helps to hold cucumber together and prevent it from falling apart too much.

I feed my fish a combination of Corn and Green Beans and Orange. All are fresh, (recently picked, not canned or frozen.) Not sure if you can use canned veggies/fruits- :dunno:
I make alot so I have plenty for many months. Freeze the leftovers.

I make crumbles out of COOKED rice and raw greens, oranges and corn- smoosh it into a paste (very fine paste in a blender)- add water to make it a little bit runny (not much) so you can mix it well. Then I spread it out and dehydrate it-
Some people don't recommend using rice, as it might expand and kill your fish.
I havent had a problem with it though. I recommend you pre-soak the mixture prior to feeding. :) (let's it expand so no harm to your fish.)

You CAN omitt the rice and just use the veggies/fruit. Or use COOKED oatmeal instead of rice. If you use oatmeal pre-soak before feeding. ;) (it can expand too.)

This is my fishs` staple diet. But, I suppliment with live foods and other veggies/fruits.

HTH's!

I cut about a 3 inch section out of the middle of the carrot, then cut that down the middle. And add 1 piece of it into the tank. I then usually eat the other piece myself. :p and no I do not boil it it is fresh and raw.

I've tried giving all my fish lettuce, but they get all hyperactive and start bumping into things. I have no idea why- I always rinse the lettuce really well. They do, however, love mushed peas

P.S. Not to get off topic, but you have 2 male bettas in a 1 gallon tank, phoenix?
