Ok guys new to this forum stuff so easy...

This is where i'm at right now. I have a 30g tank with 5 (1") RBP's. I have a bio wheel, water moving filter, 2 heaters (75 watt, 100 watt), and 5 artificial plants. I have been feeding them mostly frozen brine shrimp, and rosies (feeders). Today i picked up a big slab of frozen beef heart i'm going to try.

My Questions:

1. Swimming VERY low in the tank by the stones. Ideas?

2. Best food combo? I'd like feed the pellets for nutrition, but don't know what kind and how much? I have left over Cichlid pellets from previous fish. Could i disguese them in the frozen food?

PLEASE feel free to criticise my tank and help would be greatly appritiated!

Farhad

Pictures Soon! :good:

Thanks for the reply!

Yes I know. I am friends with the Acuatic Life specialist @ my local pet store and he agreed to take a couple back when they are ~3".

Now please get working on the above questions!!!

Sorry

That's normal for red belly piranhas. They are extremely skittish fish.

Usually, at 1" they are just coming into their skittish stage after being more brave in large groups when smaller. Sometimes they will get less shy when over 6" but not always and not usually, in fact.

If you bought them because of the myths of death and carnage without knowing much about them, then you are going to be severely dissapointed in them, to be honest. I'm not trying to say anything negative towards you or disuade you from keeping them but that's more often than not the reality of rbp's. I just want you to be aware is all.

If you want an aggressive and mean piranha that attack the glass or chase your finger etc. then you'll have to try some of the Serrasalmus species like S. rhombeus, S. sanchezi or S. elongatus. Even then you aren't guaranteed a fish that is an outright terror but most likely that is what you'll get. You'll have to keep them in a tank by themselves. No, nothing else at all can ever be kept with it because they will kill everything and are loner fish. You may hear others say plecos or whatever can be kept with them, it cannot. It will 100% never be able to work out. I know I went over the top here with not to add anything but I know you'll ask or wonder or someone else will say it can. it can't, just trust me. ;)

Feeding- Keep up with brine shrimp and bloodworms for a couple more weeks but soon they will be too big and ignore it. Feed fresh white fish meat like Tilapia, catfish nuggets, octopus etc. Raw shrimp (it has to be raw and uncooked. It will be gray colored) Don't feed too much beefheart, just as treats once in a while. Red worms will be ok and soon they will graduate to night crawlers.

I klnow you know this and have already been told but I want to reiterate...You need a larger tank in a couple weeks. 5 rbp's need a minimum of a 125g tank. 3 rbp's minimum tank size is a 75g. Don't think you have much time, they grow 2" a month and they WILL kill each other off if they get crowded. They won't allow each other in a 29g tank as they are even more territorial than cichlids are.

Edit: BTW, if you want to keep a piranha in a 29g tank that will probably be aggressive, you can keep a sanchezi in a 29g for life. You'll pay a little bit for one and won't find them in stores (You'll have to buy it online. If you've never done that, that's how I buy almost all of my fish so you'll be fine) but I think you'll be happier in the long run. Just an idea.

Thx alot for your interest and PM!

I' didnt buy them beacause of death and carnage. i just liked how they hung out in a pack and it was fun to watch them eat together and i miss that...

Can you find me a link or two on those other species you mentioned... Just looking for fun, and i know i won't be able to keep these guys for that long...

Thanks alot!

NP at all. :)

It's late right now but do a google search for serrasalmus sanchezi. same with elongatus and rhombeus.

A quick help for you...

sanchezi's can be kept in a 29g for life.

rhombeus will need a 120g minimum when fully grown but that will take years and years, and you can get by with a 55g for a rhom for a couple years.

elongatus will need a large tank also. They don't grow huge but they are extremely active swimmers.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask and if they aren't answered when I get back on tomorrow night I'll do my best to try and help you.

Holy cow...

Um ok... you are going to have to explain some of this stuff to me..... Very detailed and hard to understand

Not much info at that site, to be honest.

Why not ask specific questions instead. :)

For example...do you want an aggressive fish, solitary, able to live for life in your 29g or are you upgrading, if so when? Of the fish above, do you like the looks of all and would like one? How much are you willing to pay for a fish? etc.

That's much easier than going into depth too much and giving info you don't care about or need.

Ok thx. Again new to this forum.

My dream fish(s) would be a shoal (pack, or whatever) aggresive fish, that was active, and could be keep in my 30 gallon. If such a fish exists i would be willing to pay up to 100 bucks. Right now im very, very happy wtih my red bellies, but know that i won't be able to keep them for much longer...

Thanks a million

Hey i also live in Michigan (G.R.). want to sell me some of your cool species or serrasalmus or what ever?

*Edit* So your suggesting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serrasalmus_sanchezi ? CAn i keep more than one?

Exodons fit that description. I'm not sure of the scientific name, but that's what people on here call 'em. The Wolf and CFC have them. There's a thread on this forum a few pages back about feeding them, too.

They're a type of tetra that stay small, I think 3 inches, and they should be kept in groups. At first glance they're your quintessential li'l tetra, but come feeding time and WOW, they're aggressive. They'll be fine in a 29g. I think they sell at about $10 each. :good:

It's totally up to you what piranha you want, I'm just trying to throw ideas out there so you know what is available to you.

Personally, I love S. sanchezi. They are usually very outgoing and you can keep him in a 29g tank for life. The others I suggested will eventually have to be upgraded into a larger tank.

I don't want to sell any of my piranhas but you can buy them where I do...

http://www.sharkaquarium.com/store.cfm?menu=shop

http://www.aquascapeonline.com/store/scrip...t.asp?idAff=540

Both of those places are exceptional and I highly recommend. I buy all of my fish from there and they will ship to your door next day, live delivery guaranteed.
