I went to a fellow reefers house last night and he was extolling the virtues of chaeto saying it had rid his tank of nitrates and phosphates? Is it true that it is that good?
He had scratched some of the paint off the back off his nano and then strapped a normal low wattage lamp to the back of the tank and placed the chaeto in the chamber where light shone in.

Is it is as simple as that to use? I only ask as he said he;d give me his chaeto as hes scrapping his tank?

The thought of ridding my tank of nitrates is very appealing!!!

In my experience its effective IF there's plenty of light, my new one will run t5s above cheato. There's enough water flow to keep it adjitated and you trim and thin it regular.

I found normal energy savers ineffective unless itS one if those enviro ones 125watters off ebay. Without seeing his set up I kinda doubt his claims as in a nano I dont think there will be enough room or flow over it

bummer thats disappointing thought I;d cracked nitrates for a bit then!! :(

Ben, could I have it in my display tank, I don;t have a sump to put it in and the rear chambers don;t get light but if it was at the back behind a rock it wouldn;t be too visible to the eye and I should still get the benefit?

yes you can :good: but i keep mine on a clip at the top of the tank.

you could, but with a small amount i dont think it would be worth it.

have you read up on bio pellets at all? you could maybe rig up a little HOB reactor for these? would feed your corals too

I haven;t but will have a look now mate, cheers

yes my nitrates have been 10 all the time. until now. and i used to only do 10% water change until to day.

Si, why not put an attractive macro into your display. Halimeda, ulva spp and the red caulerpa's are all attractive, nitrate guzzling additions to the aquarium.
