Fair Prices? You Tell Me!

i would recommend doing deals, where i work we do say cories are 1.40 each do buy 5 for 6.50, this may encourage people to buy more, which in the cories sake is good for them and the more you sell the better for you? can i ask if you were planning to set up a display tank? also were you going to mix fish species or have a separate tank for each fish species? and one more are you going to run one filtration system or have one filtration system for all tanks?

There will be deals, they will be worked out at a later date.
There will be display tanks, each species will have a tank specific to them, and the tanks will all have seperate filtration. Incase of any disease outbreak should occur, I can quarantine the one tank but all others will be intact. There will be back up filtration systems in place incase of any emergency.

cool, i know alot of questions but i could almost write my business studies essay on you, which prefer to instead i have to run a crappy tuck shop thing. but anyway are you going to have a few specialist fish (i'm only mean the odd expensive pleco, or larger cichlid) or stick with the basic sturdy fish?

Love the idea but.... lol

How are you planning to insulate the building?
How many tanks will you be having running?
How Many plugs are required to filter or run each tank independently?
How is you stock brought in?, is your own stock purposely bred?

I can see a few issues with what your planning on doing, prices sound excellent but to make any sort of profit from the way it seems your planning on running it, the prices will have to be considerably higher.

How do you plan on stocking if for any reason your stock stops breeding, it happens and it also can be very seasonal for them to get going.

Am really curious in your venture and all the best with it :)

I'm in the US so I'm kind of doing the currency conversion in my head. . .seems like some of your prices are about 1/2 of what they are at the "higher end" pet stores in my state. The chain ones sell them for A LOT less, but then again, all the tanks are connected and share the same water, so I feel that the, "you get what you pay for" philosophy applies.

I like the idea of doing the deals for schooling fish. It would be great if you posted a bit of info stating these types of fish do better in groups. One pet store I shop at always tells me that single fish of certain types are okay by themselves ("sure one danio would do fabulously in your 3-gallon tank with your two guppies"). It's frustrating but I've learned to look up any fish I'm planning to buy to make sure they are not schooling fish (unless I have room for them).

Best of luck. Hope you have an enjoyable and successful business. :)

Will try to answer these questions to the best of my ability :)
The building is already fully renovated, so has been completely insulated ( we got a grant from the local council to reduce amount of heat & electric wasted?) We have solar panelling on the steading and farm house roofs so the electric will be reduced significantly mainly because we are in the middle of fields so there are no trees, or other houses blocking the direct sunlight.
My uncle is a free range dairy and poultry farmer, so the steading already has specially equiped sockets and fixtures built to deal with the machinery he uses. ( as he churns his own butter etc )
I will have a supplier, someone I have known for many years, so I will get some extra discount. I will also have breeding tanks of the more Rare species Of fish, certain L numbered plecs & also some of the more easy to breed popular tropicals, (mollies, guppies, platies, swordtails, etc)

Sounds very well thought out :).

I would still have a certain amount of concern due to scottish weather been so bad from time to time and insulation issues but i guess seeing how it goes will always be the ultimate answer.

Just remember the breeding of some L number plecs can be very hit and miss, some have them for a long time with still no breeding. They also (the rarer species) tend to be quite reluctant and seasonal in regard to breeding so fry on a regular basis if at all would be something to look at, maybe get a supplier for them aswell for backup purposes ;).

I still think the prices will be a little bit low, you will be surprised how much electricity is used with a nice amount of tanks, Solar panels is an excellent option but im not entirely sure it will be enough to run a substantial amount of tanks 24/7.

Anyways, i wish you all the luck in the world with the new venture and hope it's very prosperous for you :)

I wouldnt have the L numbers in all the time, one of the people who will be working with me has a successful breeding trio of many of the L numbers so he is more than willing to have his young go up for sale in my shop. He would be recieving the majority of the money from them but thats between us :)
