OK i'm jumping the gun a bit here but am planning ahead for when my fahaka (currently about 2") grows out a bit. I was planning on getting another 4x2x2 100 UK gallon tank for him, but have just been given :D a 40"x31"x24" tank. Do I move my freshwater community into the new tank and give the fahaka the 4x2x2, or will the new tank, which i calculate to be about 107 UK gallons suffice? I pick the new tank up tomorrow but forgot to check whether the 31" is width or height, I'm guessing that if its width it would be better but if it is height reckon it would still be OK, or not enough footprint area?

Bearing in mind that our fahaka went from 2 inches to 13 inches in 11 months, I'd move yours into the bigger tank as soon as you get it and leave your community where it is.

Well done for being a responsible fahaka owner!

yeah after reading yours and rockers experience with growth rates i thought it would probably be best to get him into the biggest tank possible asap. I just wasnt sure whether the larger footprint area of the 4x2x2 might be better, even if the total volume was slightly less

If the tank your getting is 30" wide and not tall I think your fahaka will be happier in that one rather than the 4x2x2.

Cookie (my fahaka) is in a 4x2x2 but he does not move AT ALL!!!!! He's quite shy young fella really, hangs around his pot and buries himself.

I'm looking at my 40x30x20 right now and I think thats a much better tank for a fahaka.

Just make sure your filtration is up to scratch!

Paul.

initially i will be looking to use a 1200lph cannister, but think in the long term a sump will be what i go for. cheers for the pointers though.
Out of interest what sort of water change volume and frequency do you do at the moment?

Cookie's tank is run off a sump aswell powered by a 3000lph pond pump (Hozel Lock titan).

I do about 20% water changes everyweek, although I'm confortable in missing a week if I'm in a rush, as there's such a small bioload.

Paul,

Any chance of an update on Cookie ?!? ;)

Haven't seen any new piccies of him for ages !!!! :D

Chris, how's life down in Sunny Devon !?! ;)
