That is FANTASTIC news!!! I'm especially excited about the legislation you mentioned... it's about freakin' time fish and reptiles gained some legal protection!! They're living things too, after all.
You are darn right they are!
Our government IS doing good things after all!
WHO KNEW!?!? :p
I was thinking the exact same thing

I was at a Walmart today. I was going to spend about $60. I was so upset by the betta "Display", that I walked out, without buying anything. I was so mad I couldn't speak to anyone. all that would have come out was a stream of $%^&*($%^#@@##$. They had about 40 males all stacked around the sink. (seems to be where all the Walmart's around here keep the Bettas. They were stacked in rows, about 4 high, all the way around. KEEP READING it gets worse. They must have run out of room. So, some genius came up with the idea to put all the Females together in one of those plastic containers they hang on tanks. Must be about 10 inches long, by maybe 5 inches wide, and about 8 inches high. I may be OVER Estimating the dimentions. There were at least 5 females in there. A couple were nipped so bad, that they may have even been CT's but there weren't enough fins to tell what they were. Seeing that made me leave. I am going to look up the address, and # now. I'll post that as soon as I find it.

OH how exciting - I get to call somewhere and rip someone's head off.

AFTER i let them explain themselves, of COURSE.
:p

I'll let ya know how it goes.

I haven't been in our local walmart in a while, but I will go and look, and get the store number as well, for future reference. How would one go about that?

Can I just say something? Bettamomma you are my idol! Instead of silently griping I shall speak up for the poor defensless fishies! And if they don't listen, i'll strangle them! *cough* I mean, talk nicely to the manager... :flex:

Momma is a great lady!!! All her chewing ass finally got us somewhere! I agree, fish are animals that hurt and feel pain as well as dogs and cats, and they need care! GO MOMMA, GO!

I know that rabit lady? (right) made a difference at her confrence for walmart. SH esaid she was going to get them to stock cycle (even tho it dont work) and 1 week after reading that thread... MY WM had cycle! So maybe someone should pm her and ask her to bring up care again!

manyfish4me, wow thats horrible! My wm isn;t that bad and their bad. My stack them over sink too, but on racks, and when they run out of room they atlest stack them on the shelves, but they do exactly as i said, they stack them. So the ones on the bottom can't breathe :/ . i hate wm's fish department (mine and yours any way) I have no problems with wm in general, but their fish are awefully cared for...

You can find their store number by going to walmart.com and going to the store locator - then type in your zip code and it will bring up the stores in your area.

And thanks for the kind words. I really needed some tonight.
I'm going to keep picking away at any avenue I can think of to make life better for them. And they will KNOW I mean business!

I heard back from this guy yesterday.
He has some mighty interesting things to say.

I told him my story, and how we were in the process of collecting info to submit to WalMart. He asked if I would include a copy to him at the time I submit it. He said he gets complaint calls about bettas on a regular basis, but it's always that the person starts out by saying "I was in XXXX store today and saw..." He said that nobody thus far has gone as far as we have to create a collective report with so much information.

I asked him what we should be doing, and he VERY STRONGLY recommended that we make phone calls, write letters, blah blah - all the stuff we've been saying all along. And get this report submitted to the highest up person at WM that I could get it to. (and send a copy to PETA lmao)

One thing that I found very interesting and made me rather angry... he said that the reason he didn't get back to me immediately is because he wanted to go back and look up some things they've done in the past regarding bettas. In his search, he located a letter that had been sent to both PetSmart and PetCo headquarters last summer (summer of '04) which recommended that they modify how they stored and handled bettas. They also recommended to them that they provide betta care sheets, which PetSmart does - but they don't include the information the Humane Society asked them to include. ALSO... he said that both chains completely ignored their request to change the cup sizes, how they care for them while they're in the stores - just overall general policy on how things were done with bettas. Nice. ALTHOUGH - I do know that new PetSmart stores are going to betta barracks, so they *sort of* are heading in the right direction.

One last thing he said we should do is to contact ANY local animal rights organizations that we can possibly find and let them know about WalMart's treatment of fish when we see bad things in their stores. And contact them EVERY time you see something going on. Some organizations are obligated to do an on-site visit every time they get a call, so if they get sick and tired of going to WalMart they might put the smack down on them.

Some organizations to check for in your area might be:
Humane Society
SPCA
Animal Alliance
PETA (if you dare - lol)
Local rescue shelters

etc.

Go get em folks!
I'm off to work on my report!

UPDATE on my post a few up. I went back to that Walmart today. Upon seeing the container again today, I realized that I greatly OVER exaggerated the size. It is only half the size I thought it was. The Females were still in that container, But now they are only 3.
One Royal Blue, that looked like she is at least part CT. (Hard to tell her tail was a bit nipped, and most of her bottom fin is in shreds.) The other 2 were teal. Only 1 looked like her fins hadn't been touched. (I guess she was the one doing all the damage.) The ones that were sick looking the other day, were gone. (I guess they died.)
I found a guy working in the section, and took him to the girls. I told him I wanted to buy the poor Royal girl, to save her. I told him that they shouldn't be in there, and would kill each other. He said he couldn't sell her, because he thought the dept. Manager was treating them. He said she was here before, but is now away. Then said, I would have to wait for her to return, so he could ask.
I told him that they are going to die. He then said: "We know about Fish, that's why I think they are being treated". I told him that even if they were being treated, they should NOT be together, and not out on the sales floor for people to see. I told him they needed to be separated immediately. He refused, and again said I would have to wait for the manager to return.
AS for his statement, how much can they really know about fish, for the girls to be like that in the first place. :/ I left very upset. I could not just stand there, and wait for this woman to return. Watching these poor fish pick each other to death. :-(
I feel so bad that I tried to buy, and save 1, and was refused. I'm sure she is going to die. :-( I think it is going to be a long time before I walk into that store again.

BETTAMOMMA,
Please take my story, and store info, and add it to your list. I may not have been able to save these poor girls. Maybe this will help to save others in the future.
THANKS

I just called the store and told the manager I spoke to what you posted here.
She was familiar with bettas, and that always makes it easier to talk to them about it.

I asked her to PLEASE go over to the fish dept. and not only look things over, but to make sure that they do something with those girls. I also asked her if there was something that could be done so that the people who work there when the dept. manager isn't around know what they're doing and who's being treated for what, how to take care of them, etc. etc. She suggested to me that she would ask the dept. manager to hold a training session for everyone who might work in that department. (which was impressive because I hadn't even requested it - she offered it, nice!)

Oh, and I also asked her to pass on the message to stop stacking the cups like that.

I hope they get that girly out of there and get her some care, it sure sounds like she needs it. We've done what we can. I would *bet* that if you go back over there and ask for a manager, you'd be able to get her. But I completely understand your not wanting to go back.

And I will most DEFINITELY be adding this case, the full story, into my report. thumbs:

THANKS. I really want to go back, and see that they have been moved.
I am afraid I would loose it if I went back, and they were still there. So for now, I think I'll stay home, and hope that woman does what she said, and moves those girls.
Once again

Don da da......... It's BettaMomma to the rescue. :flex:
