Extinction can be reversed soon

The 'dire wolf' resurrection has caused controversy within the science community. There were only fragments of dire wolf DNA available so they were 'edited' into grey wolf DNA. So the three cubs are not actually dire wolves but genetically modified grey wolves. The company which created them said that grey wolves were the nearest living relatives to dire wolves but other scientists have commented that the two are not only different species but they are in different genuses, having diverged between 2.5 and 6 million years ago.

Apparently, they look a bit like dire wolves might have looked.

I used to know these two Mohawk guys who got hold of the shell of a Mercedes Benz. Just for fun, they rebuilt all the mechanics (this was in the late 1970s) using a couple of old Fords. It looked like a Mercedes and they had great fun driving it through a bigoted town that didn't like the idea they had such a car. It was a big joke for the guys in the factory we worked in, although not everything worked well and they only kept it for a summer.

I'm thinking these dire wolves, that so far only look a bit more like a species not seen for thousands of years, are in the same category. It's a cool project, for a summer.

We can all feel great that we're making so many other species extinct, because of course we can bring them back anytime.

Who will bring us back after we become extinct?

If octopi solve the lifespan thing, I hope they'll be smart enough to leave us be. Maybe they can make human toys and we can be as popular with their kids as dinosaurs are with ours!

nearly everything requires a clean environment... cockroaches, bacteria or viruses will rule the world, after we quit wrecking it...

Actually in the end there will be nothing but a hot ball of molten nothing to rule; and i suppose after that if we look far enough into the future it will be rather cold at nearly but not quite 0k

That's the very long range view, but we'll be extinct (probably) long before then. This is still the Age of Bacteria, and the planet can go on being fantastic for a long time after we're not here to enjoy that. This dire wolf game is just that - a game. The amount of DNA used was tiny, and it sidesteps a whole lot of inconvenient complexity.

It's the genetic version of making a musical about dire wolves.

I always thought the dire wolf subplot on Game of Thrones was such a smart touch--to establish that these creatures were alive during the mythical period of the piece.

Now, is someone working on dragons?

peace; i could use a dragon - one with a lot of hot air to warm some people up.

Talking about mythological creatures like dragons can lead to flame wars....
