I'm at the start of cycling my 65l tank (day 2).

I'm going to buy an external and would love some help & advice please...

Here are the ones i have access to currently:

* Eheim Classic 2215

* Aqua one CF1200

* Eheim Ecco 2232

* Eheim Classic 2211

* Eheim Classic 2217

* Eheim Ecco 2231

There's probably more lol

Not got much spare cash after setting up so looking to buy 2nd hand.

Any advice appreciated :)

Are Fluval & Tetratec any good?

Eheim filters are quite expensive, I'd recommend a Tetratec ex600 for this tank over any of the other brans mentioned, the Eheim eco's are rubbish anyway, as are most fluvals (bar the massive one whose name I can't remember).

If you are on a budget this might be good: http://www.allpondsolutions.co.uk/aquarium-filters/aquarium-external-filters/aquarium-external-filter-150-l-h.html
Cant say how good it is but their more expensive external is fantastic, I use the 2000ef and cant fault it. This might be worth a go for £20

just today i set up my first external, the eheim classic 2213. its brilliant, im majorly impressed with eheims build quality, intially at least. i doubt it will break anytime soon though. i got it for 55 quid posted from charterhouse aquatics online, and it came with a full compliment of media and sponges, a good length of eheim hose, and a tap system for inlet and outlet. they call it the 'eheim classic 2213+' - the '+' indicating the media and taps, and possibly the hose, which are not always included. they do the full range of eheim stuff, worth checking out.

its quiet, unobtrusive, and looks easy to maintain. the 2213 is rated up to 250L tanks, so may be a bit overkill for you. just letting you know you get serious quality with eheim.

Oooooohhhhh i am intrigued!!

Is it not ok to have a filter made for bigger tanks? What would be the problems / drawbacks?

I'm currently looking at the 2215, looks nice :)

Thanks for the heads up!!

Ideally you want at least 5x turn over of your tank per hour, 10x is better though so going for a filter rated for a bigger tank is never a bad idea.
