Hello,

Im Fairly new to fishkeeping, I have used a Juwel tank with the internal filter (in the corner) - I would like to now setup a new tank (I havnt got the old juwel one anymore)

My question is really whether i should go for a tank already with an internal filter built in or an empty tank so I can use an external one, I like the sound of an external one as I could clean it etc without disturbing the tank - The only problem is, how do I get the pump tubing in and out of the tank without it looking pretty ugly? Would I need to cut the hood to accomodate the pipes going in ? I really liked the look of the Fluval tanks with the cabinet where the pipes are pre-cut coming up through the bottom of the call however they are pretty pricy, was trying to keep costs sown to a minimum!

Cheers,

Craig

I think what your talking about is an external canister correct? If so, then I would just go with a HOB (Hang-on the -back filter for a tank under 55G. Anything more extravegant than this is unneccessary. There are plenty of HOB's to accomodate tanks even up to 100G so you should be able to find a good one that will have plenty of filtration for a small to medium sized tank. :good:

Hello,

Thanks for your super quick reply!

Yes sorry an external canister i was thinking off because I could hide it away in the cupboard underneith and get some small hose extensions, I have seen some HOB Filters but Im extra fussy and just wanted to see two hoses but didnt know how to achieve this.. is it possible ?!

Might have to go for a HOB Filter then... :( I think ill be looking around the 55G mark, maybe slightly bigger

Cheers,

Craig

Well I wasnt tryign to imply that you can't and shouldnt use a canister. There are a couple good canisters (eheim I guess being the best, but of course, also the most expensive) out there. I have never had a canister before and I dont know if the tubing comes with them (which I would assume that yes they would), but they should be easy to run right up over the top of the tankand then just turn it on.

And honestly, from what I've heard, its harder to clean canisters than almost all the other filters because of the tubing and the way they are designed. Idk from experience, but I can definatly say that a HOB would be easier to instal and maintain, but again, not trying to force ya to go with it, do what you think would be best for your tank and its design :good:

Sorry for the late reply!
