Any advice on internal and external filters?

I have an internal filter but im considering an external filter which is best? and what external filters would be recommended?

Thanks

External

easier to clean

more room in the tank!

what size tank have you got?

+1 external.

I recommend Eheim's Professional 3e range if you have the cash, otherwise Eheim's Classic range. Fluval *05 range are also ok, but I don't like them as much.

Never had a eheim, but i have use the fluval 205 and tetra tec 1200 and both are excellent.

agree with kitykat eheim pro 3 is a good range i love mine and looking at getting 2 more for new tank

the other advantage of externals is that they tend to hold much more media than internals too .

Why not? I would like to know as I am considering getting a Fluval 305 for a 180l tank, any better suggestions (for a price of between £70-90 at the most and around 1000lph)

If you're going to buy an external filter then you'll want it to last a good 5+ years, I wouldn't bother with the Fluval 04/05 range personally, where I used to work we were always having them back, they'd always fail just outside the warranty, which is inconvenient.

Eheim without a doubt make some of the best filters going, Tetratec make good filters too, the taps are a little flimsy however but nothing to worry about, Rena and Hydor also make very good externals and the Fluval FX5 is phenomenal but is probably too big for this tank.

Just remember, the number one thing with externals is, regularly clean the media, and ensure you grease any rubber parts.

Yeah, both my TetraTecs are due their clean out soon as they have been setup running about 3 weeks on my current tank. Will do one this weekend and the other the following weekend... Check for any splits in the rubber O-ring and re-grease if needs be. :) My Fluval 205 was excellent, but the impellor started to make a very loud noise so i replaced it with the ex1200. Will definately be sorting the impellor on the 205 though as it is a very easy to use and easy to maintain filter.

I like my 305 :) Does my 240 litre perfectly. but that said i've never really used anything else. I'll be going for a FX5 if i get this 5 footer advertised locally :D

Amazing advice thank you all so appreciated!

Going to write all these external filter names down and start looking round at them to get an idea of which one I want. For a 3 litre tank what sort of size external should i go for? (Thinking of a 4litre tank in future)
